It is very interesting and I think, beneficial to visit other cities around the country and see what they are doing to redevel- op deteriorating or underutilized property within their city boundaries. I was very impressed with the way the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, the State of Ohio and their large medical centers and local Universities worked together with each other and with private Developers to leverage their assets and build some beautiful new and restorative projects that have trans- formed downtown Cleveland from a crime infested, dilapidated area into some really neat plac- es for people to live, work and socialize together. If you think about it in simple terms, that's what a city is....just a group of people that are pooling their resources to create and maintain a place that we all can enjoy living in. One of the key tenets of enjoying where we live is to be able to be prosperous and feel like our families are safe and protected. That is why we attend these kind of events...to learn from others who are experiencing challenges and how they have dealt with them and how we can apply some of the same solutions to the challenges we have in Rexburg. One fellow reported having moved to Cleveland from Boston temporarily and liked the area well enough that he decided to stay and establish a business there. The thing he fell in love with was the courtesy and friendliness of the people. He said, "People were actually taking turns merging onto the freeway, I couldn't believe it!" That made me think...Are we like that?...do we take turns when we come to the roundabout and are we courteous in other driving situations or kind to our neighbors and co-citizens? I like to think that we are and I've had several people tell me that we are a friendly town. My hope is that as we grow, we will not lose that small town friendliness and kindness to each other. When I attended Ricks College back in the dark ages, they emphasized "the Spirit of Ricks" as how the faculty and administration cared deeply for each and every student. I truly felt that from my Instructors. That's one of the reasons I love Rexburg. I challenge each of us to do our part to keep that spirit as a strong part of the culture of Rexburg. Let's love and care for our family, friends and neighbors and welcome visitors to our hometown as nowhere else on earth! Yours truly, Jerry Merrill Life is great...in Rexburg, Idaho!! DID YOU KNOW: The user rate payers support the City of Rexburg Public Works Department waste water treatment processes. Federal regulations, the Environment Protection Agency and the Clean Water Act and its amendments set the standards for waste water treatment and disposal. All waste water treatment operators are certified and licensed by the Idaho Dept. of Occupational Licensing (IBOL). Anyone working within the industry must qualify with a college education or continued coursework in environmental science and public health and are subject to Idaho BOL Board examinations. Sea- soned operators attend continuing education coursework from professional trade organizations to maintain their certifications and ability to work within the industry. Prior to modern waste water treatment, populations were exposed to illness and diseases related to poor water disinfection. These include cholera, typhoid, dysentery, etc. Modern waste water treatment protects your health from these dis- eases as well as other water borne diseases and is primary to community health and welfare. The waste water treatment plant must properly treat raw sewage before being released back into the environment. It is the last line of defense of water pollution and contamination. On average each person in the United States produces between fifty and one hundred gallons of waste water per day from household and industrial wastes. Operators maintain the highest professional standards and are required by law to meet all water quality standards per Federal and State law. Facilities and infrastructure are also regulated by the Idaho Dept. of Environmental Quality, and must meet current and future regu- latory standards for the discharge of treated waste water back into the environment. 35 N 1st E Rexburg, Idaho 83440 208.359.3020 / fax 208.359.3022 customerservices@rexburg.org Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Rexburg Tabernacle Orchestra Fall Concert Thursday, November 5, 7:30 pm Free @ The Rexburg Tabernacle Program will be Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov; new work by Chris Palmer, Canadian composer Rehearsals for the annual Thanksgiving Community Choir will begin Sunday, October 18, 7:30 pm in the Rexburg Tabernac- le.
