I was reading this morning an account of an Ancient Nephite King named Benjamin (sound
familiar to anyone?) who spoke to his people about always striving to do good things and be-
ing of service to one another. A phrase in their response to him struck a chord with me…they
said that his words had inspired them such that, “…we have no more disposition to do evil,
but to do good continually.”
I see so much of that here in Rexburg. I am always so grateful to all of you who volunteer your
time and means to help make Rexburg a better place. From those who play, sing and direct our
wonderful orchestra and choirs to those who give time to coach and teach our youth in recrea-
tion programs and in our schools, this community just would not be what it is without your
marvelous efforts. I also see and hear about so many who help out neighbors, church mem-
bers and are kind to any strangers that you encounter around town. Thank You so much for
your service to one another!
Many times we give a lot of attention to our sports teams and individuals that do well and they
deserve that attention. Let me mention some others who don’t get as many public accolades.
Our Madison High School Debate Squad had a great year and qualified nine students to go to
the national debate tournament. That is an outstanding achievement! Congratulations to their
Coach, Mr. Bruce Benson and the students for a job well done! I know we have several Merit
Scholar Finalists from Madison High and they are to be congratulated for their fine efforts as
well.
I would also like to mention a couple businesses that I have noticed lately. I appreciate Lisa
Widick and her great crew at the Standard Journal. Since Lisa has taken the helm, the paper
seems to be striving to be a positive influence in the area. Their reporting is factual and mostly
accurate (which I know is not always easy to do!) but the biggest thing I appreciate is that they
have a new attitude of trying to make a positive difference and I hope you will support them in
this endeavor. I like having a home town newspaper! Matt Johnson has moved on but I hope
he’ll get this message…he was an amazing sports reporter…such great coverage. I don’t know
how he got all the area teams covered so well, but he did. All of the Reporters and staff there
are doing excellent work and I thank them.
Another business that is really working hard to make a difference is Rocky Mountain Power.
Sometimes they are portrayed as an evil big company but they do so much for our local com-
munities with donations for the Food Bank, a BIG donation to replace the deteriorating win-
dows in the Rexburg Tabernacle and many other things they help out with. I hope when you
pay your power bill, you realize that you are supporting a company that gives back a lot to our
community and tell them Thanks!
One last item is a great volunteer opportunity for families. We need host families for our Inter-
national Summer Fest coming up in July. It is so fun to host folks from all around the world.
Even if it’s a little inconvenient, your kids will love it and you will too. Go to the website ida-
hosummerfest.com and click the link for host family or just volunteer to help at any of the
events. You’ll be glad you did your part in making Rexburg the Friendliest City in the World!
Thank You!!
