Air Show June 18th Events/shows at the Romance Main Street Mile and Parade July 4th Summerfest July 9- 16th As I write this message on Memorial Day after visiting a few grave sites, I am filled with gratitude for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for each of us. We all enjoy the freedoms of this great land because of their selflessness and that of their families. Thank you so much to all who have served and protected us. I was privileged to attend the Madison County Fire and Emergency Services Advancement and Pinning Cere- mony recently. How proud I am of these men and women who serve and protect us here locally. I was especially impressed with the heartfelt words of our retiring Emergency Services Chief, Mikel Walker. Mike is retiring after 39 years of faithful and dedicated service to the people of Rexburg and Madison Coun- ty. He was asked to briefly review the history of the department. Wow, how things have changed from the early days of just a Fire Chief and a lot of volunteer firefighters and just two ambulance personnel to the first class protecting force that we have today! I quote his words: "Many things have changed but our mission remains the same. We care for the little old lady at the care center like she is OUR grandma, we care for the family whose house is burning as if they are OUR family and it is OUR house. People trust us even though we might be total strangers to them. We cannot do any- thing to lose that trust." I appreciate so much that level of caring and professionalism that Chief Walker has personified throughout his career. The good news is that we have so many in our Fire, Emergency Services, Police Force and many other city employees that display a high level of dedication to serving all of us. We have other cities and private companies that offer jobs to many of our skilled employees quite frequently, usually at much higher salaries, and we do lose some of them occasionally, but I would like to express my appreciation to all of our employees at city hall, the sanitation, wastewater, water and streets depts., and in the city shop and parks and recreation and cultural arts depts. along with anyone else I may have missed for their caring and dedi- cation to making the City of Rexburg a wonderful place to live. Please let us know of things we can do to better serve you and also take a moment to thank any of our great city employees for the good work that they do. A small compliment can go a long way towards even better service! Have a great June in the friendliest, smartest, safest city in Idaho!! Jerry Merrill P.S. We still have need for homes for our SummerFest dancers and musicians to stay in and also other volunteers for the activities during that time. Please contact the Chamber of Commerce office if you can help @ 356-5700.
