Happy Valentines
Day!
All city offices will be
closed February 15th
for Presidents Day
Wow, my first month in office as your Mayor and I am so excited about the privilege it is to live
here and be involved in all that is happening! I’ve learned that the Mayor goes to a lot of meetings
and there is a lot to learn about how things work but it has all been very interesting and I am enjoy-
ing serving.
One of my goals for the first 30 days was to look for ways to be more efficient in the things we do
to help keep our tax levy rate as low as possible. I’m pleased to report that in many of the meetings
I’ve been in that topic is actively discussed. One example is our Madison County RPO (Rural Plan-
ning Organization). We work to coordinate efforts in the Rexburg area on duplication of materials
and equipment purchases as well as labor to accomplish things. We discovered through this process
that several of the entities were planning to do traffic studies so instead of 3 different studies, there
was one study done and 3 entities combined to pay for it thus saving taxpayers a good chunk of
money. We also coordinate equipment purchases so if something can be shared we don’t have the
City and County both buying something that can be a shared use item.
I also found that after the expansion of our Fire Station that one of our great firemen used his con-
struction skills to build a conference table and did a beautiful job all while saving several thousand
dollars in the process. We are a growing city and it does cost a lot to build and maintain city infra-
structure, services, and amenities but I am glad to see that officials and staffers are on the lookout
for ways to be as frugal as possible with our tax money.
Another goal was to get some land to build a new water tank and drill another city well on the west
side of town for our rapidly expanding neighborhoods in that area. Thanks to great cooperation
from Superintendent Geoff Thomas, his staff and the Madison School Board we have struck a deal
where we help them and they help us to get this project moving forward.
***EXTRA IMPORTANT ITEM*** It has been drawn to my attention that many of you are not
signed up on our database to receive emergency alerts. This is important so we can notify you quick-
ly in any kind of emergency situation. Please go to the following website, http://
public.alertsense.com/SignUp/, and enter your contact information. In this day of no land lines, it is
very difficult to warn you of things we need to if you are not signed up. You can also find this link
on the Madison County Sheriff website.
Lastly, a big shout out to our city street crew for their valiant efforts to keep our streets plowed. I
know in years like this where we have an abundance of snow, it is frustrating to many to have a big
dike of snow plowed into your driveway but our guys are doing the best they can with the resources
they have to work with. This year especially, most of them were out plowing on Christmas Eve
AND New Year’s Eve when the rest of us were enjoying time with our families and they even had
to hold up Christmas morning activities with their kids because they were still out plowing to make
it so the rest of us could get around. Thank you so much street crew, we appreciate your hard work
for us!!
-Jerry Merrill
P.S. We had a great Snow Fest activity last Saturday and I can tell you that Polar Bear Plunge water
is VERY cold!! We also have a great Cross country skiing trail at the Teton Lakes Golf Course.
Check it out and get some great exercise!

The Teton Flood Museum is looking for volunteers
Our volunteers’ time and talent are vital to the success of
the museum. If you are college-age or older, have some
free time during a week day or weekend day, and are look-
ing for a rewarding, enriching experience, then volunteer-
ing at the Museum may be for you.
Museum volunteers bring skills, life-experience, and ener-
gy to supporting the Museum's mission and the work of
our staff as they donate their time. The weekly hourly
commitment varies per position, but most volunteers
commit an average of two to six hours per week.

tor, Jackie Rawlins at jackie.rawlins@rexburg.org
