Good Luck in this
coming School year
Hello Everyone,
I was perusing a website recently from a group called “Farm Rescue”. They are an organized group
in the Midwest who have a huge impact in the lives of farmers who are having crises or tragedies in
their lives or that of their families. I was very impressed with the volunteering spirit exhibited on the
video I watched as these people came from all over to help good folks in need. I have also seen and
heard of many instances from my growing up years on a farm west of Blackfoot about neighbors
pitching in to help neighboring farmers here in this valley who are having hard times.
Having just celebrated Pioneer Day, I am always in awe of the pioneering spirit of our forebearers.
The people who came to this valley had a tremendous sense of community. They worked together
building roads, buildings and dug the canals that helped this valley bloom like a rose. I’m sure much
of this work was done on a voluntary basis for the good of the community and the economy as a
whole. I salute these great people and am so thankful for their foresight.
Now I ask the question, “How will our progenitors view us in 20, 40, 60 or even 100 years from
now? Will they say, “We are so grateful for their foresight and community spirit?” or will they say.
“Man, I wish someone had thought about this and done something about that back in their day.”
We have many opportunities to do some of this great work in Rexburg right now. Our Museum of
Rexburg really needs some volunteers who can spend some time leading tours, doing historical re-
search and other duties. We would like to see the museum open more hours and have information
about people and their families who lived here to go along with the artifacts that are interesting, but
really come alive when they have a story to go along with them. We have some great interns from
BYU Idaho that help out and a couple wonderful community people but we really need more folks,
especially those of you who have lived here awhile and could help us dig up stories about the pio-
neer families and other history up until the present time.
Our Museum Curator, Jackie Rawlins has done a wonderful job remaking the museum, but she can’t
do what she’d like to make it even better without some more help. It doesn’t take a lot of time. Jack-
ie will be grateful for even small amounts of a day each week that could be given regularly to move
this work forward. It’s a very important part of our history and we must preserve it before it disap-
pears forever!
Please contact Jackie at the Museum or call her at 270 -6366 if you can help out with this great ef-
fort.
Speaking of being remembered, we have another opportunity for individuals or businesses to be
recognized for community support by adopting a bridge at the Teton Lakes Golf Course. The old
bridges over the river need to be updated with newer, safer ones and if you would like to sponsor a
bridge, we will put a nice bronze plaque on the bridge in your honor. Please contact Matt Nielsen
here at the city office if you would like to be a bridge sponsor. Call 359-3020, ext. 2343.
As always, thank you for being great people and keep up the good work!
Jerry Merrill
