I know Easter will be over by the time you read this but I hope you had a wonderful time celebrating with your family. One of our great volunteer groups, the Ki- wanis Club, worked hard to put on the Easter Egg Hunt which is always a fun event for the kids. We so appreciate all of the volunteer groups who do such wonderful things in our com- munity at these special times of the year. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the tragic passing of a person I will greatly miss. Kathy Striffler was one of our Crossing Guards for our School Dis- trict. I will miss her big smile and wave, no matter what the weather, as I would pass her every morning at the intersection of Main Street and 5th West. I will miss her coming to the football tailgate parties to visit with everyone. Rexburg is made up of so many great people of all walks of life. I’m sure Kathy will be missed by many and we wish the best for her family. I missed by one place my prediction about our Madison Boys’ Basketball Team. They played well and made it to the championship game. I am so proud of them and our student “Maniacs” and our whole community for conducting themselves very well; in fact, we did win the State Championship in Sportsmanship, proving that it is important “how you play the game”. WELL DONE, MADISON!! I read an interesting article recently about how Pocatello was ranked the 7th “Smartest City in Idaho”. As I read, it listed the top ten cities and who was at the top? Rexburg!! We ranked the #1 Smartest City in Idaho! This ranking was based on highest percentage of residents with a high school diploma and the lowest percentage of drop-outs. Congratulations Parents, Teach- ers and School District Officials. You are awesome!! I am so grateful to represent you as your Mayor. You all make me look good. Thank You! Things are picking up, now that Spring is getting here. Many construction projects are under way. We will have a lot of street construction going on this summer with our water line replace- ment project and the new Thornton interchange going in. Please be patient and careful. Give yourself some extra time to get places so you don’t have to rush. We don’t want even one per- son injured or worse because of the construction projects. Every one of you are too valuable and appreciated. Again, PLEASE pay attention and be careful out there. Let’s all clean up our yards, plant lots of flowers and trees and make Rexburg beautiful for the Spring and Summer season. We have scheduled a community service project at Riverside Park on May 4th at 4:00pm and can use as many volunteers as possible to pick up rocks off the new soccer/football fields before we plant the grass. Bring gloves and a bucket and help us out. Thank you so much for being a great community! -Jerry Merrill The Madison Senior Citizens Center is seeking community members to volunteer who are available weekdays from 10:00am until 12:30pm for Meals on Wheels lunch deliveries. Anyone interested can contact Dave Klingler at (208) 356-8442 for more information and details. If you are college-age or older, have some free time during a week day or weekend day, and are looking for a re- warding, enriching experience, then volunteering at the Mu- seum may be for you. Museum volunteers bring skills, life-experience, and energy to supporting the Museum's mission and the work of our staff as they donate their time. The weekly hourly commit- ment varies per position, but most volunteers commit an average of two to six hours per week. For more information please contact our Museum Curator, Jackie Rawlins at jackie.rawlins@rexburg.org REXBURG TABERNACLE ORCHESTRA Free Spring Concert Wednesday, May 4, 7:30 pm Rexburg Tabernacle featuring music of Schumann, Mendelssohn and Selections from STAR WARS! My Life Project—Personal Life History Documented! The Madison Senior Citizens Center in cooperation with Professor Scott Martin of BYU-Idaho invites you to have your Life History Documented. Professor Martin’s students need practice interviewing community members. The assign- ment/semester project is to conduct 4 interviews with ques- tions about life events and then write the life history and pre- sent it to the person that was interviewed. This is a FREE gift to you and only requires your time to schedule the four interviews of approximately 30 minutes each. Each semester that Professor Martin teaches this class, he needs approxi- mately 15 to 20 community members to participate in help- ing the students complete their projects. For questions or more information, please call Dave Klingler at (208) 356- 8442. Spring Yard Cleanup - April 11-May 20th. Materials to be picked up must be out at the curb and not in the alleys or right next to garbage cans. We will try to pick up materials on your scheduled garbage pick up day. Please bag or bundle materials as much as possible so that they may be picked up by hand. If the City has to use heavy equipment to load trees, branches, etc. then you will be notified and you may be charged for the use of that equipment. Limbs & branches should be bundled and cut no longer than 6ft.
