I write this letter on the eve of Halloween. By the time you receive it, probably, all of the loose
candy wrappers and chunks of broken, withered pumpkins will be gone. You will then be
thinking of the coming of Thanksgiving and a fast approaching Christmas.
We have so many festivities in the coming months that one celebration is often nearly forgot-
ten. I am speaking of Veterans Day. It will be held November 11 th, which is a Tuesday, at
Smith Park. There will be a wreath laying, music, and a fly-over. It is a good time to remember
all those who have served. When I say this I am reminded of the pioneers of this community
as well.
I have read David L. Crowder’s great book, Rexburg, Idaho: The first one hundred years, 1883
-1983. There are many amusing as well as inspiring stories and great quotes. One from Deseret
News says, “Rexburg is the largest town in Fremont County, having a population of about one
thousand four hundred souls. It has two semi-weekly newspapers and the population grows
daily. Saturday, and almost every day, the main street is filled with teams… The future of the
‘Burg’ is great and if you want your hat knocked off, just say otherwise. The people love their
town and its coming greatness and The Snake River Country, which is in its infancy, no man at
this time can foretell.” Another is from Crowder’s book that states, “The Rexburg citizens cer-
tainly agreed with this optimistic assessment at the start of the twentieth century.”
I agree as well in the sense that I think the thing that I appreciate most is the enthusiastic atti-
tude of those early days. As we read the histories we get a sense of the greatness of the genera-
tions that have passed before us. What will be our contribution?
The City of Rexburg is doing well. I want to thank, our workers, all, who keep this ‘Burg’ run-
ning. The waste water facility is in good hands! City Streets are much improved this year! I of-
ten hear comments on how clean our town is: the parks, the streets, and the homes. These
comments come from people outside our town.
Thank you all! May we remember our veterans, may we remember the past, may we be re-
minded that there are great things in our near future, and may we take part in helping our com-
munity along. We can do great things as private citizens just like the early residents of this
‘Burg’ and the vets who helped to make the world a greater place.
