I enjoy this time of year. I pray for snow in the mountains. We need the snow there for our reservoirs. It never used to be such an issue as it has now become. Population centers across this great State of Idaho have grown and it becomes ever more im- portant to conserve water for the future of cities and agriculture. The state of the State of Idaho is much improved this year and I can assure you that the City of Rexburg is doing quite well. There is growth taking place that will provide more jobs and increase opportunity for more growth. I only wish that things were better at the national level. We, as a whole, have seeming- ly lost that sense of propriety and the work ethic which characterized this nation for so many years. Can we get it back? Or, will it take some catastrophic event in commerce or government to return us to our roots and the values that made us the greatest nation on earth? Is the entertainment industry eroding our values? Is the problem exacerbat- ed by social media and news media in general? Are they corrupting our youth and even us? Is the problem with education in our schools or in our homes? What can be done? I believe that we as parents and grandparents need to take a more active role in the education of our youth. We may not be able to control all of the in- fluences of the world, but I do believe that we should insure that there is a balance of influences. The youth need to hear both sides of the issues. It has long been known that the more we hear just one side of a story or issue the more likely we are to em- brace the philosophy of that story or issue. For example, political campaigners know that whoever has the most television spots and sound bites in front of the electorate is much more likely to win the election. There is a great battle for the minds and hearts of the coming generation. We all recog- nize it. We must do something about it. The greatest opportunity to do so is in our homes. Let us resolve to become better citizens. Let us resolve to become better teachers and mentors to the rising generation. Let us do all that we can to protect this great nation and this great community. I have preached enough! Happy New Year! Let us remember Christmas all year long! -Richard S.
