As of this writing, tomorrow will be Thanksgiving. I love this time of year. We do have much to be thankful for and it fits in well with the coming Christmas season. I remember that in my early years Thanksgiving was a big thing. It was a big thing in our school, with skits and plays. We definitely knew who the pilgrims were. We learned how the Native Americans taught them how to plant corn and how to fertilize it. The pilgrims were helpful and were invited to a “Thanksgiving Feast”, theirs and our first. Those pilgrims came for religious freedom and a chance to pursue their dreams. They came to better themselves. It makes me think of the people who moved across the “Great American Desert” for religious freedom. They were pil- grims as well. They were seeking freedom and the opportunity of pursuing their collective and personal dreams. A few years later there were hearty and adventuress people that made their way into this Upper Valley. I like to brag that they were the best of the best. They were pil- grims again. They were the founders and the builders of communities in places such as Rexburg. Those were hard times but they were a people equal to the task. They excelled, they did not just survive. They built schools, churches, mills and extensive irrigation systems. They did this all almost immediately after their arrival. They also created the Bannock Acade- my, the first higher education facility in the State of Idaho. Today its successor, BYU Idaho is the largest university in the State of Idaho. This area was and is successful because of a “can do it” attitude that stemmed from those original pilgrims. They were dreamers and builders. They were innovators and inventors. They were pioneers in many ways. They have given us a legacy. It is ours to preserve and honor. Our legacy and duty as citizens of this area is to continue to be pioneers in education, innovation and entrepreneurship. Our legacy and duty is to have visions and dreams for the future and for our youth. We call our- selves Americas Family Community. We can be so. We can begin by giving thanks to those who were here before. Then we must move forward with faith in ourselves and our community. We are a “can do it” people. Rexburg is well. There are some who need a little help with utilities and such at this time of the year. You can make a much appreciated donation included with your utility payment. There are other ways of expressing our thanksgiving as well. Thank You All! -Richard S. The program is funded completely from donations. Underprivileged children who participate in the program are chosen by law enforcement officers. Children and officers meet the morning of Shop With a Cop where they travel together in a law enforcement vehicle, with lights and siren. First they enjoy a breakfast donated by McDonalds and, in years past have gone to Kmart to shop, however, due to the closing of the Rexburg Kmart we are now excited to have the opportunity to shop at the Rexburg Walmart. Not only do the children get a chance to purchase Christmas presents that they otherwise would not be able to buy, but they also get a chance to build a positive relationship with law enforcement. The program benefits children in Madison, Fremont, Jeffer- son, Clark and Teton Counties. Fundraising and donations are done throughout the year to insure that funds are available at the time families and children are selected for the yearly shopping event. We appreciate any donation you make to this program at any time of the year. All donations go to the Shop with a Cop program to help pro- vide Christmas for children in need. If you have questions regarding the program, please con- tact Lt. Colin Erickson or Sgt. Colette Davison at the Rexburg Police Department (208) 359- 3008. Donations to the program can be made at the Rexburg Police Department
