We had weather!
I don’t remember a storm of such magnitude. My wife and I live in the Crest Haven
subdivision just a few blocks south of the temple. Lori asked, “What is that noise?”
The noise was the sound of hail pelting the City of Rexburg and BYU -Idaho campus
and the wind that kept churning the air. We could see this dark and foreboding storm
mass and it seemed to, from our vantage point, be directly over the city. It just stayed
there! We began to get a lot of rain so I and my wife drove to the various most affect-
ed areas by the rain. My first concern was the wastewater treatment plant. Donna
Archibald was there within minutes cleaning the screens thus allowing the waste water
to flow unimpeded. I visited with our policemen at intersections and at accidents, en-
during the pelting hail, doing their job. I was most impressed with their patience and
kindness in dealing with the people. I went to the BYU-I Center and found university
staff quickly making arrangements to provide housing for those displaced. They told
me, as Mayor, that their doors were open to any city residents who were displaced. I
observed our parks and street departments doing all that they could to return to some
degree of normalcy. Everywhere there were problems, there were city workers man-
ning pumps, clearing drains, doing everything possible to alleviate the process. A spe-
cial thanks to Depatco. They are a local company that brought into town a large pump
to help lower the water level. I met Jon Weber and Todd Smith, our County Commis-
sioners, out actively trying to help; they had pumps and people helping. We saw uni-
versity students having fun, but what impressed me most was their willingness to help.
They manned bucket brigades, they mucked out apartments, in one very long bucket
brigade line, they were heard singing “Called to Serve”. It was exciting to see and hear.
I want to thank all of the citizens of Rexburg for their patience and their willingness to
help their neighbor. There was a degree of caring that is not often found in the world
anymore. Everyone came together as a community. It made me feel proud to live in
Rexburg. We new-comers are often inspired by what happened after the first flood. Dis-
aster relief agencies such as the Red Cross were completely taken aback by the work
they didn’t have to do. It was already done. Well I am happy to say, that that same spir-
it survives today. THANK YOU, ALL!
