Mayors Message:
The change in the weather has got me, there’s something afloat in the air.
It stirs in me a deep longing and beckons me to go back there. It’s the
smell of the Fourth of July fireworks, and it makes me think of my youth,
when everyone was patriotic and excited to see the troops as they
marched by with colors held high. There were picnics, softball games and
band concerts, oh! It was so much fun in the park. I loved my mother’s
good potato salad, Aunt Verda’s homemade sweet rolls, watermelon, and
homemade ice cream. There were pies and cob corn and sweet melons
too. There were cap guns, races and games, it was so much fun to be
young then. It was so much fun on the Fourth.
We live in a time fraught with economic and political concerns. If we al-
low ourselves to dwell on them we will rob ourselves of the joy of living.
We will cheat ourselves out of happiness. What a waste. Let us exult in
our heritage. Let us celebrate our past. This letter may reach you after the
Independence Day celebrations, but that is okay. There are still many
events to follow; the Dance Festival and the Pioneer Day celebrations.
This year marks the Centennial of Madison County and the Rexburg Tab-
ernacle, as well as our county fair and rodeo.
If that is not enough, throw yourselves a block party. Get together with
family and friends and celebrate life. Make some memories and teach
your children to be patriots.
