Community Update
Mayors Message:
We are losing ever more of those stalwarts of our community. I speak of
Warren Porter and others who have recently passed, we will miss you.
Warren grew up during the depression, as so many other contributors to
our society. I think there is a nugget of information in this fact – hard
times shape good people. It’s the enduring and striving that makes us
grow. When we think of the hearty pioneers who settled this part of
Idaho we see they, and the early generations, accomplished the most, and
they did it with less. They tended to be healthier because of the rigors of
life, and seemed to suffer less with anxiety related maladies. Those who
grew up in the Great Depression were the ones who served honorably in
WWII and the Korean War. They gave so much to this generation. I fear
for the most part, we haven’t learned the lessons of the past. I believe it’s
our time to step up and honor those of the past. We need to do more
with less. We need to help each other, and we older ones need to teach the
younger ones. We believe we live hard times now, yet they in no way com-
pare to the past. We need to grow in independence. We need to teach
ourselves and the younger ones to work. I remember a saying from my
depression era parents, “Root hog or die.” Oh, there are many others, but
that one reminds me if we are to succeed we mustn’t be afraid of a little
dirt and hard work.
Warren Porter was not afraid, and we shouldn’t be afraid either.

On the Same Page
at the Madison Library
Madison Library District is hosting another session of On
the Same Page January 25th – February 17th. On the Same
Page is a community wide book reading with lectures, dis-
cussions, performances, and activities connected with the
selected title. While they last, free copies of this year’s
novel, Thornton Wilder’s The Bridge of San Luis Rey, will
be given to interested readers beginning at the kick off at
7:00 P.M., January 25th, in the Romance Theatre. The
opening will feature a presentation on Peru, the novel’s
setting, by Sandro Benitez, and a performance by fla-
menco dance troupe Traditiones. Many scholars and local
experts will give presentations during the following weeks
including lectures on Wilder, Spanish colonialism,
strengths and weaknesses of various bridge types, and the
Golden Age of Spanish Theatre. There will also be an
introductory flamenco dance class and competitions for
bridge construction and identification of significant
bridges of the world. Schedules with specific information
for these events are available now at the library.
