Community Update
Mayors Message:
Well Christmas fast approaches. I believe it is a good thing that Thanksgiving pre-
cedes Christmas. It seems that the Thanksgiving experience sets the mood for Christ-
mas. It prepares us to be more giving, and more caring, for others less fortunate. I can
think of no better way to feel better about myself than to share with others.
I am thankful for so many things that are good in this life. I am thankful that I have
been privileged to serve as your mayor during the last two Christmas seasons. One of
the things most enjoyable is the Shop With A Cop program just before Christmas
each year when McDonalds and the Trent Chicos family host a breakfast for all those
children who then walk from McDonalds after breakfast over to K-Mart to shop for
themselves and family members. It is an overwhelming experience to watch young
children shop for their families first, then themselves. I am always amazed to witness
their unselfishness. It is indeed a heartwarming experience.
We all can be a part of it by donating toys or money at the Rexburg Police Station on
Main Street. The Mayors Youth Advisory Board will accept donations as well on a
special evening at the Porter Park Carousel where children can meet Santa. This will
be held December 17 from 6:00 – 8:00P.M. You can bring canned goods as well as
cash. The canned goods really help those less fortunate.
One other thing that we can do is look at making the future better. Many were disap-
pointed in our recent Presidential election. We have to put it into the past! We have
to look to the future! “We must endeavor to persevere”. If hard times come we will
grow from it. If hard times come we have the opportunities more than ever to be of
service to our fellow man. If hard times come we will come to recognize true values
and true worth. We bemoan the fact that our children don’t value money, and don’t
know how to work. We need to remember that the “greatest generation” was a prod-
uct of the Great Depression.
