Community Update
Mayors Message:
There is a lot going on in Rexburg, including the demolition of homes and the pend-
ing construction of new apartments. We sometimes lose track of other important
events. I speak of the passing of a friend, Blair Manwaring. Blair had worked for the
City of Rexburg for a number of years as a Building Inspector. He was a veteran of
the Korean War. Yes, those involved in that conflict are rapidly leaving us. He served
this community long, with a sense of dedication, commitment, and a love for those
youth he often served. He was my neighbor and friend. He leaves a legacy that we all
should try to incorporate in our lives. Blair Manwaring was blessed with a generous
amount of common sense. This is a trait often missing in our present society. We will
miss Blair and we pray for his lovely wife.
We often forget our forbears, those early settlers and pioneers; Blair was a product of
that generation. It is sad to see some of our older homes go, but progress, and change
is upon us. I believe those pioneers would applaud what is currently taking place in
our community. They were a part of change; they were builders, innovators, and vi-
sionaries. There are a few who would have us remain in the past. There is no future in
this. Man is here to make change to grow and to make a better world. Each of us
should be actively engaged in improving our community. Can we bring back the past?
No. Should We? No. Should we cherish the past and extol the good that has come
from it? Yes. But we cannot bring back those who have passed, nor can we preserve
all of the things they left behind. We can build monuments to them. We can place
histories with photos including journals giving first person knowledge of what took
place in their lives. We can best preserve the past in this manner. We can keep the
memories safe at our museum, and in our library where all can learn and understand
the achievements of those who have gone before.
More importantly, we should embrace change and take an active part in it; as our pio-
neer forbears demonstrated.
