HomeMy WebLinkAboutNewsletter City_October 2010have seen the hurt in their
faces. I have seen their
embarrassment. Please
join with me and others in
making their burden a lit-
tle lighter. It is simple,
just a little more on your
bill. Please specify on your
bill that you would like to
donate the extra amount.
If you live in the county
you can make a donation
to Madison County Indi-
gent fund. Donations can
be made online at
www.rexburg.org or you
may come in to our office
at City Hall here in Rex-
burg, 35 N 1st E. For
those of you who “feel the
pinch.”
This is a time to help.
We have
all heard it
or seen it
in print.
The reces-
sion is
over. That
is good news , I guess ,
but, if you are on a fixed
income or even if the job
you have is not respond-
ing to market trends you
might be in trouble. We
have all seen the in-
creases in pricing at the
supermarkets. It has cer-
tainly changed the way
we shop. I love the smell
of bacon frying. I don’t
smell it as often. I re-
member when it was a
breakfast mainstay, not
anymore. For many in
our community the situa-
tion is much more dire. I
have recently visited with
folks who really struggle
to pay public utilities
bills. These are frugal peo-
ple, people who are respon-
sible and deserve better, but
they don’t quite have
enough to go around.
Though I recognize and feel
the effect of the economy
my situation is somewhat
better. I do have opportu-
nities to help others. Many
of you do as well. The City
of Rexburg has a program
available to help people in
need. This program is called
Rexburg Public Utilities
Assistance (RUPA). Most
all of us can help a little. All
we need to do is check an
amount to be donated on
our Rexburg utility bill.
Even if we “round it up” to
the next higher dollar it can
help someone. This pro-
gram is jointly administered
by Rexburg and Madison
County. Currently our
funds are extremely low,
and now is a time of great
need. I have witnessed the
struggle these people face. I

Mayor’s Message
The beginning of November means cold temperatures, sleet and snow but it also
marks the beginning of The Cube Cyclocross Race Series. This annual event is a
combination of cycling and running and the bad weather and rough terrain make this
a truly unique type of racing. There are three race categories: youth, women, and
men’s with each group qualifying for awards and prizes. So come out and race or
join us to cheer on the race participants.
When: Saturdays, Nov.6, 13 and 20th Where: Nature Park
Time: Races begin at 9:00 am Cost: $15 per event, $35 for series

The proposed date for YARD WASTE CLEAN
UP is October 11 - November 12. Materials to be
picked up must be out at the curb not in the alleys
or right next to garbage can. We will try to pick
up materials on your scheduled garbage pick up
day, but may be a day after. Please bag or bundle
materials as much as possible so that they may be
pick up by hand. If the City has to use heavy
equipment to load trees,
branches, etc. you will be no-
tified and you may be
charged for the use of that
equipment. Limbs &
branches should be bundled
and cut in 4' to 6' lengths.

Here are some helpful Trick-or-Treating
Tips that will keep your family safe this
Halloween:
• Carry a flashlight with fresh batteries after dark.
• Wear identification that's easy to read.
• Always trick or treat in groups, accompanied by an adult.
• Plan your route ahead of time.
• Stay on the sidewalks and out of the streets. Cross only at
intersections and designated crosswalks.
• Walk. No running.
• Don't trample through flower beds and gardens.
• Watch out for open flames in jack-o-Lanterns.
• Walk with your head up and be aware of your surroundings.
• Only visit well lit houses. Don't stop at dark houses.
• Don't enter any houses unless you know the people.
• Carry a spare Halloween bag -- in case yours breaks or you fill
your original one.
• Don't approach unfamiliar pets and animals.
• Don't cut across yards and stay out of back yards.
• Always watch for cars backing up or turning.
• Review the "stop, drop and roll" procedure in case your cos-
tume catches on fire.
• Never accept rides from strangers.
• Respect other people and their property.
• Be polite and say "thank you."
• Don't eat any candy until it's inspected for tampering under
bright lights.
• Avoid candy that has loose wrappings, is unwrapped, has
puncture holes, or is homemade.
• Small children should not be allowed hard candy they may
choke on.
