I love the Fall season…beautiful sunny days, not much wind, FOOTBALL, getting the grain and potato harvest in and did I mention High School and College FOOTBALL? Yes, it’s no secret that football is my favorite sport but we have had some very successful teams in other sports this fall. Our Madison High Boys’ Soccer team came home from the State Tournament with the Sportsmanship award, the Girls’ Soccer team won the Academ- ic State Championship, our Madison Marching Band swept the ISU Marching Band State Competition and the Cross Country, Volleyball and Football teams are still in the thick of their state competitions as I write this. I cer- tainly wish them all the best of luck and want them to know that we are all proud of them as they work and play hard and conduct themselves well on and off the field. I hope you all had a safe and fun Halloween this year and didn’t did get scared TOO badly in our many haunted houses, straw mazes and the like that we have around the community. There certainly is no shortage of Hallow- een fun here in Madison County!! Next up is the Thanksgiving season (no, we are not skipping it for Christmas like so many of the stores do! ;) We have so much to be thankful for in this area. I was thinking about that the other day when I was outside walking with the school kids for the Mayor’s Walking Challenge. The beautiful, warm, fall days; the striking colors of the leaves in the nearby mountains; low crime rates and lots of economic development opportunities here in this beautiful Snake River Valley. I’m always torn between keeping it a secret just for the lucky few of us that already live here or trumpeting it out to the world to share our good fortune with others. Many folks have expressed to us the desire to have economic opportunity for their children so they can remain here after they graduate from college. We are working to help encourage that in our Economic Development Department. We look for compa- nies that want to expand their operations to a small town that has a hard working, dependable and honest work force and also encouraging home grown businesses to start up and remain here. It’s a process, but we are mak- ing inroads and some good headway. Many of you have asked questions about our Center Street reconstruction project. There are several reasons why we designed that the way we did. First, we had to replace the water line to get it up to standard for fire flows in the downtown area to protect all those buildings. We also felt like this was a good chance to create a place for people to gather for small functions. That’s why we designed in the little plaza area and the fire pit. We will have our Christmas Tree lighting ceremony there on the Saturday after Thanksgiving so please come and enjoy that with us! Center Street is our busiest pedestrian street so we designed in the bulb outs to make it seem narrower purposely to slow traffic down and make it safer. It also gives us a place to plant more shrubs and flow- ers to dress it up. The raised planters with the trees in them will also be blooming in the spring and summer with Daffodils, Tulips and colorful flowers all the way through summer. It will be a beautiful and fun place to be! If you have a band or local performing group that would like to perform there, stop by City Hall and schedule it… we’d love to have you use this space for bringing the community together. Center Street used to be very dark and now with the new lighting installed, it is much more inviting for folks to enjoy the downtown area after dark. This project is also part of a much bigger plan to redevelop some of our downtown blocks to provide more office space and parking space for existing and new businesses that are interested in locating there. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Please enjoy it safely!
