Friday & Saturday 10am-2pm Hello Fellow Rexburgers! I had the pleasure this past Thursday to spend some time walking at the Madison Middle School with many of your children or grandchildren as part of the Mayor’s Walking Challenge. What a beautiful fall day it was and it was so much fun to visit with the children as we walked, finding out what their favorite subjects are, what they like and don’t like, etc. We have wonderful, bright and very enjoyable children here in Rexburg and this experience only strengthened my resolve to do everything I can to help protect and serve you, our families of Rexburg. I also want to encourage all of you to participate with me in the Mayor’s Walking Challenge. My goal is to walk an average of 10,000 steps every day to lose some extra weight I’m carrying and just help me be generally healthier. The Blue Cross Foundation research shows a definite correlation to healthier communi- ties being more economically vibrant and just generally happier. It’s pretty much common sense… the less time we spend sick and in the hospital the more time and money we have for good work habits and more quality family time! I met a man at the hotel gym in Boise last week who seemed a little grumpy, so in making a little conversation with him we got talking about finding good places to eat. He grumbled, “You can’t find a decent restaurant in this town!” I said, “Really?, I’ve found several that are very good.” To which he replied, “Well, when you travel to Seattle a lot, you get used to a REAL foodie city!” I chuckled a bit, thinking about how many of us would love to have the variety of restaurants they have in Boise. I guess it really is all in your attitude about your situation. I am loving the new places and all the old reliable restaurants that we have here in Rexburg. If you look around you can find many good quality and fun places to enjoy eating out here in town. Speaking of positive attitudes, I would like to thank all of you who have been positive and excited about the changes and construction happening here all summer. It’s interesting to see and hear the difference of attitude. Some complain about how horrible it is and can’t believe it’s taking so long and at the same time others talk about how nice it will be when this or that project is done and how excited they are to have a nice smooth road, new curbs and walkways and other fun amenities in our little “Burg”. Thank you for most of you being the latter instead of the former! I recently heard a quote from a man I greatly respect, Pres. Gordon B. Hinckley. He said, “You don’t build out of pessimism and cynicism. You look with OPTIMISM. You work with FAITH and things happen.” Please have a wonderful and safe fall season and watch out for and help the Farmers as you see machines on the roads. They are a major part of our wonderful heritage and we appreciate their hard work.
