AUGUST 25TH
August is shaping up to be an excitfng month. It’s back to school tfme, with Madison School District
startfng up on August 23rd. I am very appreciatfve of the work that our educators do in educatfng
our kids. I know that it is often a thankless job. But I would like to extend my heartielt appreciatfon
for all that they do. I am also very proud of the relatfonship that we have with the School District.
They are great community partners.
You may have notfced that there is a bit of constructfon occurring around town. Our Public Works
Department has been busy this summer repairing and upgrading several streets, as well as installing
needed upgrades to our water and sewer system. Thank you for your patfence as we conduct this
work.
One of our big projects is Center Street. We have had to upgrade the water line in our downtown
for some tfme now. With the help of the Rexburg Urban Renewal Agency the City will be able to
make some cosmetfc improvements to Center Street when it is rebuilt. Center Street is one of the
most heavily used pedestrian streets in the downtown and we hope that the improvements that are
being built will enhance that area. A big thank you to the businesses on Center Street who are work-
ing with the City during constructfon.
As you may have heard, The Great American Eclipse is coming through Rexburg on August 21 st. The
last tfme a total eclipse was seen in Rexburg was in the 1880’s, so this is truly a once in a life-tfme
event. The City has been contacted by news outlets from across the country, as Rexburg has been
named one of the best places in the natfon to view the eclipse due to our high altftude and tradi-
tfonally clear weather in August. Visitors are coming from across the world to Rexburg in August.
We have commitments from Denmark, Japan, China, Taiwan, England, France and many more.
Many people have asked what we, as residents, can do to prepare for the Eclipse. I would encour-
age everyone to welcome people to Rexburg. This is a great city and the world will get to see it
firsthand. We will be holding a Community Meetfng on Wednesday August 9th at 6:30 pm at the
Rexburg Tabernacle where we will be going over what the City has been doing to prepare for the
many visitors that are expected.
The City has been working with community partners such as: Madison County, the City of Sugar City,
the Rexburg Chamber of Commerce and others to prepare for the eclipse. We have posted im-
portant informatfon on our city website www.rexburg.org, and www.rexburgeclipse.com. Please
visit these pages to keep up to date with eclipse preparatfons.
We are looking for volunteers to help out with the eclipse. If you would like to help, we have ser-
vice opportunitfes startfng on Saturday afternoon and running though Monday. Visit “JustServe.org”
or “Rexburg.org” to sign up.
Lastly, our Cultural Arts Department has put a lot of work into hostfng a Storytelling Festfval on Sat-
urday, August 19th (the Saturday before the Eclipse). Come to Riverside Park to hear natfonally rec-
ognized storytellers (visit “tetonstorytelling.org” for more info), and later that night the Los Angeles
Astronomical Society will be hostfng a free “star party” for the community at Riverside Park.
Have a great August!
