Wow! Can you believe it’s May already? It seems like we just celebrated the new year and here we are 5
months into that new year already. How time flies when you’re having fun, right? I do enjoy serving this
community as your Mayor. We are not without our problems and disagreements here and there but by and
large I see people being kind and striving to serve one another and at the end of the day that’s really what
it’s all about. A huge thanks to those who put on our annual Easter Egg Hunt. It is sponsored by our Cham-
ber of Commerce and the Rexburg Kiwanis Club. This volunteer service group puts in a lot of time and effort
to make good things happen here in our “Burg”. I encourage anyone who would like to give a little service
time to the community to join with one of our many service clubs…they all do tremendous work to better
our community. If you don’t know how to join, send me an e -mail and I can put you in touch.
Thanks also to the good folks who have sponsored drug awareness programs I have attended recently. One
done by Madison Cares and another by Andra Hansen’s BYU Idaho group. It brought home to me the need
for us to not let down our guard but to be constantly vigilant and looking out for our children and grandchil-
dren to protect them from the travesties that these substances can bring on.
I hope you are noticing the beautiful tulips that are blooming in many of our city beds along the different
entries and intersections in town. Our City Parks people worked hard last fall to get these all planted and
now we are enjoying the fruit of those labors. We want Rexburg to be a beautiful and welcoming place and
we are making strides in accomplishing that. There are many other things I would like to do but we have
limitations of time and budget that we have to work within. But stay tuned!
A few have commented on some of the trees in town being cut down. This is all part of our ongoing plan to
remove trees that are planted in the wrong places (growing into power lines or blocking necessary views,
etc.) and some have insect or disease problems. We will be planting many new trees this spring and summer
to replace the removed ones with trees of a better variety for what we want to accomplish and to provide
some semblance of design and continuity in our urban tree canopy. Center Street will be a highlight of these
efforts to be done this summer. I think you will like it.
One water saving tip…now that sprinkler systems are being activated, please pay attention to rainy days and
turn the sprinklers off. In early spring, you really don’t need to water much. I usually don’t even run mine
regularly until after Memorial Day…an occasional soaking is plenty. Most of us water too much in spring and
fall. It will save you money and help conserve our precious water resource.
I’m excited about all the new home grown restaurants that are popping up. I plan on visiting and supporting
them regularly and I hope you will too. Our business community is growing.
Thank you all for being great Rexburgers. Please keep it up!!

the carousel by letting kids ride it for
