As I write this today, we’ve had some beau- tiful, sunny spring days but today is cloudy and more windy…a typical spring baseball or track meet day here in East Idaho. It helps us to be tough and hardy people but I will admit, I look forward to the warmer, sunnier days to come. I’m encouraged to see many people out running and playing all sorts of games and sports to get exercise after a long winter. We have a new Pickleball Association. If you’ve never heard of pickleball, it’s a cross be- tween tennis and ping pong. They play on courts that are smaller than tennis courts with paddles that look like oversized ping pong paddles. It’s becoming very popular because it is a very easy sport to learn and have fun with right off the bat (or should I say, “Right off the paddle!”) We’ve designated the paved pad on the south side of the Nature park as our official pickleball courts. That paved spot was built years ago to accom- modate roller bladers and roller hockey, etc., but never has been used much so it’s great to have people us- ing it now. If you’d like to join with these good folks and get out and have some fun and get some good exer- cise, check out their Facebook page, “Rexburg Pickleball Association”. We also have a new rugby team in town. If you want to watch some REAL tough guys, go watch a rugby game…it’s like football with no pads! They will be playing games and practices on the west field at Kiwanis Evergreen Park. For more information about rugby contact our Recreation Department at 372 -2395. I was reading an article recently that quoted a Doctor from the Mayo clinic. He said “Sitting is more danger- ous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting our- selves to death!” Even here in Idaho we have gone from a 10% obesity rate in 1986 to almost 35%! This in- cludes children and adults. It also translates to about $325 million dollars annually in medical costs directly associated with obesity. I encourage all (myself included) to get out and play just for the health of it! You may have noticed our city staff cutting down some trees along the streets and in some of the parks. We are doing a major remodel of Center Street this year that will include all new trees as well as other amenities that I hope you will like. The trees that have been or will be removed are all either involved with a new pro- ject, are planted in the wrong place or have disease and/or insect problems. All of the trees removed will either be replaced in the same spot or a new one planted in a better spot. We are working to manage our “Urban Forest” in a way that will be better for the long term health of the trees and relate better to our streets, buildings and park structures. We will be rolling out the plan for Center Street shortly so watch for that in the news. Lastly, thank you all for your support of our Police and Fire/EMS people. Our new Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman, Jason Evans came up with the idea to honor them recently and I know they appreciated it greatly. They are so grateful to know that we as a community “have their backs” and we appreciate the good people that they are and the good judgement that they exercise in performing their duties. Thank you every- one for being a great community. Life is Great…in Rexburg, Idaho!!
