Happy St.Patricks
Day
Wow! Two months of this year already gone by…it seems time flies faster by the day. Every year we think we
have crazy weather but this year takes the cake! We prayed for moisture and boy did we get moisture! Now
we need to pray for a slow warm up so we don't get flooded out. I am grateful for all the snow to fill our
lakes and reservoirs and hopefully we can get some aquifer recharge from it as well.
I have spent a lot of time at Madison High School the last few weeks. First, visiting with government classes,
then at numerous Project Citizen presentations. It is so fun and interesting to hear what our young people
think about our city government and the issues they feel are important. They do come up with some inter-
esting ideas and thoughts about how we can improve Rexburg and we try to implement as many of those as
we can.
Congratulations to so many of our teams, the girls basketball team won the district title for the first time in
15 years, the boys basketball team also finished the district tournament on top and are headed to the state
tournament where I predict they will come home with the championship trophy. Our Wrestling team had a
very successful year taking 12 to state and finishing the best in several years. The Madison Debate Squad
qualified at least 11 and maybe 13 to attend the national debate tournament this summer in Alabama, the
most they have ever qualified! We have wonderful young people in this community ….that is a strong testa-
ment to what they are taught in their homes by good parents and the many great teachers we have here.
From our Madison Community Coalition meetings, we are going to implement a "Natural High" campaign.
This encourages our young people (and all of us) to get out and do things that produce a natural high instead
of a substance induced high. We will encourage lots of physical activity and participation in activities with
family, friends and classmates to help them feel good about themselves. It is so enjoyable to go to the
games and watch not only the teams perform but also watch the band play, the cheerleaders cheer, the
dance team dance and the Maniacs, well…….just go kinda crazy!! It's all part of a fun public school experience
in a great, supportive community….and its' one of the places where I get a definite "natural high!" Kudos to
Kavi Branham and Madison Cares for spearheading this campaign and others that help reduce drug use, de-
pression, bullying and other negative behaviors in our precious youth.
Thank you all for being such great community members and rearing such good kids. I visited with one of our
"Miss Rexburg" candidates the other day and we talked about what a great place Rexburg is to raise a family
because of our strong family values. We also talked about how we need to be careful to reach out and be
inclusive of those among us or who may visit us who aren't of the predominant faith in this area. Its' very
important that they don't feel ostracized and alone but included and loved.
My first grade grand daughters' class learned about Dr. Martin Luther King and his dream. The worksheet she
brought home asked, "What is your dream?" She wrote (in some backwards letters but mostly legible), "that
everyone to follow in Gods' footsteps" and that "all people would be kind and loving." From the mouth of
babes, I pray that we can all learn, and be better citizens of this community, country and world.
Best Regards, Jerry Merrill

The Museum of Rexburg is looking for volunteers
Our volunteers’ time and talents are vital to the success of
the museum. If you are college-age or older, have some free
time during a week day or weekend day, and are looking for
a rewarding, enriching experience, then volunteering at the
Museum may be for you.
Museum volunteers bring skills, life-experience, and energy
to supporting the Museum's mission and the work of our
staff as they donate their time. The weekly hourly commit-
ment varies per position, but most volunteers commit an
average of two to four hours per week.
