Thanksgiving has gone by. It seems a little disappointing. There are so many dis-
tractions. The terrorist attacks and the resulting fears concerning travel. Then the
biggest distraction of all, BLACK FRIDAY! Whatever happened to the family
gatherings, the games cousins played as kids, the sociality, the leftovers and late
night snacks and finishing off the pies? Where I spent Thanksgiving, the mer-
chants were open for business in the early afternoon of Thanksgiving Day until
late in the evening. Some of them even called it black Thursday. Wow, times have
changed! I long for the old days. Can we bring them back? I think not, but we as a
people can hold to traditional values and observe Thanksgiving as a Day of
Thanks, a special day, a day with sincere thanks given to our Maker for all the
good things in life that we enjoy. I am thankful for our Veterans! I am thankful
for their sacrifice. That sacrifice affords us the freedom to give thanks to our
Maker. I am thankful for our City workers. They often don’t get to enjoy the holi-
days. Crime and accidents do not respect holidays, neither do fires nor the need
for emergency services. Mother Nature is no respecter of holidays and I am
thankful for those who clean and maintain our streets. It is an amazing task. It
must be done when the streets are empty, free of traffic. It is a dark, cold job and
takes over eight hours. Their efforts provide us with safe streets; not only safe,
but the cleanest streets in our area. Rexburg plows every street, both commercial
and residential; Idaho Falls, Rigby, Blackfoot, St. Anthony, and others do not. I
am thankful for all the City crews and staff. We have the safest and best tasting
water available. Our crews work tirelessly to make our public drinking water safe.
Changes have been made to insure that such an event as the Water Advisory that
the Public Health Department issued late last month will not occur again. I never
stopped drinking it. It was never unsafe! I want to thank the citizens of the City
of Rexburg and surrounding area for making this such a great place to live.
Thanks to you ALL and Merry Christmas!

The Shop with a Cop program joins
children who are in need with local
law enforcement officers, providing
the children with money to shop for
Christmas presents for their families
and themselves. The program is
funded completely from donations.
Underprivileged children who partici-
pate in the program are chosen by
law enforcement officers.
Children and officers meet the morning of Shop with a
Cop where they travel together in a law enforcement vehi-
cle, with lights and siren. First they enjoy a breakfast do-
nated by McDonalds and then go to Walmart to shop.
Not only do the children get a chance to purchase Christ-
mas presents that they otherwise would not be able to buy,
but they also get a chance to build a positive relationship
with law enforcement.
Donations to the program can be made at the
