I love this place! I love this time of year! What I enjoyed in my youth, I still find and enjoy here. I
remember the Fourth of July parades. I loved them! I am old enough to remember WWI veter-
ans marching in the parade and on a trailer were two Spanish American War veterans. That was
my first remembrance of the Fourth of July parade. I have thought back to that time and am re-
minded that there were no WWII veterans in the parade. My Uncle Syl would not have any part
of it. Our great neighbor Ray would not either. I did not understand it then but I do now. They
were all still a little too “tender”. Many of our veterans still carry and live with memories that are
hard to reconcile. Our latest generations of Veterans are reticent to be a part of the celebrations.
We wish you would! We would like to honor you. We would like to honor you for your courage,
for your dedication, for your commitment to serve your fellowman and this great nation. We
would like to thank you! We would like to show you our respect and honor you! Thank you!
I love the 24th of July parade in St. Anthony. I remember those “Pioneer Day” celebrations as
well from my youth. There would be beard growing contests, picnics in the park and parades in
pioneer clothes. Oh, and the food! We all enjoyed the celebration of our pioneer heritage.
We need to keep celebrating! We must always remember our great heritage and we must continue
to teach it to our children. They must understand the importance of this great land. They must
understand and be aware of the debt we owe to those who have preceded us and most im-
portantly, the debt we owe to our Creator for life itself and this great nation. We must keep the
celebration alive.
Rexburg is in good shape. Work is progressing in good fashion on our water-works. We are
keeping pace with our water needs and continued expansion. We are also replacing some very old
infrastructure. Our policy is to take advantage of street rebuilds such as 2nd North where we are
upgrading and enlarging capacity while the street is open. There is no sense in rebuilding a street
to only later dig and cut it up just to replace or repair old water lines. We do have in place a large
water program, much of which is funded by a generous grant. We have survived a few fairly
large storms without flooding. The repairs and improvements are working well in that regard.
The waste-water treatment facility is moving along rapidly. The fire house is looking good. It will
be a great and much needed improvement. We have some concerns, because of abundant rainfall
that there could be fire hazards because of the lush vegetation in residential neighborhoods. Cut-
ting tall grass and weeds may save your home or even a number of homes. This could be an op-
portunity for youth groups to perform a valuable service to residents.
May I ask you to thank a Vet and may I thank you for making this such a pleasant place to live. I
don’t think there is a city anywhere that represents America, as well as Rexburg!
