Well we made it!
Each year, we at the city, in accordance with law, must go through an audit process. The City
Financial Department submits all financial records to an outside accounting firm. We show all
expenses, all transactions, and all practices that might involve anything to do with the expendi-
ture or management of city funds and assets. The accounting firm “camps out” at City Hall
reviewing our books and our practices. Anything that might be curious to them is investigated.
The process is stringent! Each year my charge to them has been, “catch ‘em doing something
wrong”. Try as they might, it has never happened.
Today we met with Sally Smith, Jerry Merrill, and Jordan Busby, valuable members of our City
Council and reviewed the audit report. We are all happy that we, as Mayor and City Council
are able to work with such a great financial team. Thanks goes out to Matt Nielson and his
predecessor Richard Horner and a special thanks to all of the fine people working for the City
of Rexburg in the Finance Department; Jolyn Briggs, Deputy Treasurer, Debra Lovejoy, Staff
Accountant, Kristy Rawson, Utility Billing Clerk, and Pam Wren, Accounts Payable Clerk. I
need to thank our front desk girls as well, as they collect and account for monies received on a
daily basis and are the greatest. They are the “face of Rexburg”. I want to especially thank
Pam Wren. Nothing gets past her. She is the gatekeeper! Some would say, “She’s a Bulldog”.
She takes her responsibility seriously and there will be no “shenanigans” taking place on her
watch. Thanks to you all.
I read through another report that we just received today.
It was the results of the task force investigation of the shooting incident at Key Bank after the
robbery of Walgreens. The task force is made up of experts not connected to our Rexburg
Police or the Madison County Sheriff’s office. The report and investigation was very inten-
sive. I was on the scene just after the incident and was very impressed with the professional
way in which our officers conducted themselves at that time. Having seen and reviewed the
report and videos from the bank drive-up cameras, I know that my original judgment was
right. These brave men did what needed to be done. THEY STOOD AND TOOK FIRE!
They did their job! I and we as the citizens of Rexburg and Madison County can be both
proud and thankful to them!
