Mayors Message:
Independence Day and Pioneer Day are past. Looking back, these were
probably my favorite times of the year, with fireworks, picnics in the
park, beard growing contests and games for the kids. It was a festive
time. It was a time for remembering and paying tribute to those who
gave so much.
I attended the dedication of a memorial at the tabernacle. There were
twenty or so in attendance, none of whom were young. No small chil-
dren or teens. The evening of Pioneer Day I attended a fireside. There
was a great speaker, Nathan Williams, who helped remind us of our her-
itage. It was an inspirational message, one worth hearing. Sadly those in
attendance, for the most part, were my age and older. We are the people
close enough in years to the events of the past and the pioneers who cre-
ated our legacy. We truly loved the presentation.
I fear that we are not educating our children. We are not instilling in them
a love for the past. We are not creating in them an appreciation for the
sacrifice, the dedication and the service rendered by those who have gone
before. Without an appreciation for the past and an understanding of
what was created by our pioneer forbears, I fear for this coming genera-
tion. I fear that without an understanding of the past they will not have a
vision for the future.
I implore all citizens to take the time to teach our youth in whatever way
we may and instill in them an understanding and love for what has gone
on before. We are celebrating one hundred years as Madison County. Let
us prepare for the next one hundred years. Let us be active participants
in our future. Let us begin by teaching our children the past and invite
them to be involved in creating their future.
