Why is that, you might ask? Well, I love the beauty of the place. I love the dynamic partnership that exists with the University, Rexburg City, Sugar City and the County. But most of all I love the people. They are all concerned with the preser- vation and continuance of the value system that has created this sense of place. This community began with the pioneers who first settled here. Some of them were pioneers recycled. They had already proven themselves in getting to Utah. They established themselves and even flourished. Then they moved on to settle this area. We celebrate them and their achievement this summer with our Madison County Commemo- ration of one hundred years as a county. Rexburg was established in 1883 and has endured many trials of endurance and faith from the beginning. The weather alone, was a trial. Indi- viduals had to be tough to survive. Political persecution was a thing hardly imaginable. Mem- bers of the LDS faith could not hold office or vote in the State of Idaho. I believe that all the hardships from the early days, such as the attempt to move Ricks College to Idaho Falls and the Teton Dam collapse and flood, helped to perpetuate and keep alive that fighting spirit of those early pioneers. I believe there is a “Can Do” spirit that exists here and is alive and well. We face growth and change in a way that pioneer forefathers could only imagine. I believe that we, as heirs to their legacy, have an important responsibility to continue the dream and at the same time protect the way of life and values that are so dear to us and our pioneer for- bears. MEPI or Madison Economic Partners Inc., which was originally known as MEDCO, was formed by a group of concerned citizens who felt the need to help bring jobs to our area. They are currently the sponsors of a new group that is trying to enlist all the citizens of the surrounding area to join in a “grassroots” from the bottom up approach to planning the fu- ture. This effort will involve any who would care to be involved. The name of this new group is called Envision Madison. It is a citizen driven process which can protect the past as well as the future. You can connect with them by going to www.envisionmadison.com. The website will provide information that will guide you and help you understand the process. I am excit- ed to be a minor part in this process. I believe in a citizen driven destiny for our area. Too of- ten, planning is spawned by politicians and outside consultants. I believe that we, and you as citizens, must take an active role in planning our future. You can also call City Hall for infor- mation at 359-3020. The garden spots are going fast. Sign up at 359-3020, ask for Bob. Boy Scout Troops are wel- come at no charge. SPRING YARD WASTE CLEAN UP The proposed dates are April 8- May 20, 2012. Materials to be picked up must be out at the curb and not in the alleys or right next to garbage cans. We will try to pick up materials on your scheduled garbage pick up day. Please bag or bundle materials as much as possible so they may be picked up by hand. If the City has to use heavy equipment to load trees, branches, etc. then you will be notified and you may be charged for the use of that equipment. Limbs & branches should be bundled and cut in 4' to 6' lengths. Recreation Sign-ups started April 15 on our website www.rexburg.org Friends and Neighbors, Today, our community is growing and changing. Over the last decade Madison County has experienced unprece- dented growth, which has brought opportunities and challenges that were not dreamed of even ten years ago. These opportunities require us to ask some hard questions, questions that will affect the way our area develops over the next 50 years. Envision Madison is a once in a generation opportunity to explore growth related issues and think together about what Madison County should look like in the future. The process reflects the values of the public, the voice of the public, and the vision of the public. Broad public participation in both creating and implementing the vision is the key to this process. As the decisions made today affect our neighbors, the decisions made also affect future generations. We invite you to become part of the process. Please see the calendar of events for Envision Madison nearby. Please visit www.envisionmadison.com for more information, and to keep updated on our progress.
