You will need smoke detectors in all bedrooms and smoke and carbon monoxide alarms out side of bedrooms. A 2alObd fire extinguisher in both kitchens hung in plain sight. You will need to separate the furnace room with walls and sheet rock 5/8" type X on both sides all the way up to the sheeting of the above flooring. Also the door will need to be a metal door with weatherstripping and a threshold, with a keyed lock. The ceiling will need two layers of 5/8" type X sheet rock. All stairs will need railings or guard rails when over 4 risers. The upper floor of the main level only has a ceiling height of 6' 5" so it can only be used for storage. This should cover most things with the building but some times other things come up. If you have any questions feel free to call any of us. Thanks, Larry bretsl2/7/2018 10:25 AM Met on site with Bob and the Owner. To convert this building to a duplex it must have GFCI protection for all kitchen and bathroom receptacles and all of the wiring that is exposed must be made safe, the main electrical service must be changed out for a two pack meter because the basement is being remodeled entirely. Please permit all electrical work and call for inspections when ready. donal2/7/2018 10:22 AM On the mechanical side in order to change a home into a duplex you need to separate heating systems. On the plumbing side you need to separate the water system from one apartment to the next you will need to shut off valves. Indeed to be able to shop off the water to one apartment without shutting off the water to the other apartment.
