HomeMy WebLinkAboutLETTER 2 - 18-00701 & 18-00711 - Lorene Street - Rezone to MDR2To the Rexburg Planning and Zoning Commission Members, My name is Roland Dowell Griffith Sr. My wife, Cathy and I live at 698 Tanglewood Drive in the Stonebridge Subdivision within the Rexburg city limits. I am writing regarding the rezoning of the Grover Subdivision, land directly west of our neighborhood. I am specifically concerned with the proposal to rezone the area from Commercial & Open Space to Low -Moderate Density Residential (LDR3, I assume as no specific designation was given in the last meeting notes). A portion of this proposal has been further altered to Medium Density Residential 2 (MDR2). We endorse all of Cindy Cooper and Justin Hodges concerns and recommendations concerning traffic. In addition, I have two other points I would like to bring to your attention. First, we are concerned about the City of Rexburg's parameters/methods used in population projections to determine housing needs for the future. We understand from many different sources within our community the housing shortage that exists for young married couples coming to Rexburg to attend BYUI. However, beyond 2024, the shortage should diminish significantly because that particular demographic will have been reduced. If this in fact becomes a reality, then who will live in these multi -unit buildings? Add to that the impact of the Pathways program on reducing the need for students to even attend BYUI for more than two years. Having spent 33 years of my life in Government service and having traveled and lived in many different areas of the country, there is nothing worse for a town of 50,000+/- than urban blight, because of faulty projections on the population growth for that community. Also, what weight was given to the two year study conducted by Envision Utah, titled "Envision Madison Vision", as it continues to grow in parallel with BYUI's growth? At that point, we were living in the Henderson subdivision and participated in those town hall meetings held throughout the county. My second and last concern to bring to your consideration are the seemingly lack of plans for green space in any of the land development under consideration. Perhaps this concern has no bearing on this particular proposal for rezoning. But the concern is; where do the current and future families of Stonebridge and these new adjacent multi -unit home families go for recreation. Are there plans for a park or green space equivalent to what is currently available in other parts of the city? Thank you for your service to ALL the citizens of Rexburg and your diligence in weighing the pros and cons of all interested parties, who have more than a fiduciary interest in the future of "The Greatest Home Town in America.
