General Description Tyco Fire & Building Products (TFBP) BlazeMaster CPVC Pipe and Fittings are designed exclusively for use in wet pipe automatic fire sprinkler systems. They are made from a specially devel- oped thermoplastic compound com- posed of post chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) resin and state of the art additives. TFBP BlazeMaster CPVC products are easier to install than traditional steel pipe systems, and at the same time, provide superior heat resistance and strength as com- pared to traditional CPVC and PVC piping materials used in the plumbing trade. Various adapters are available to connect CPVC pipe to metallic pip- ing. All female pipe thread adapters have brass inserts for durability. Grooved adapters connect directly to grooved end valves and metallic pipe, with flexible grooved end couplings. WARNING Tyco Fire & Building Products (TFBP) BlazeMaster CPVC Pipe and Fittings described herein mustbe installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro- tection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities hav- ing jurisdiction.Failure to do so may impair the performance of these de- vices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. The revision now permits the use of “Exposed Installation” and “System Risers” in addition to “Con-cealed Installation”. Addendum #1 Factory Mutual (FM) TFP BlazeMaster CPVC pipe and fit-tings are FM Approved for use in: • Miscellaneous non-manufactur-ing occupancies as described FM Loss Prevention Data Sheet 3-26, “Fire Protection Water Demand for Nonstorage Sprinklered Prop-erties”, Table 2, Section L. • Residential occupancies as de-scribed in FM Loss Prevention Data Sheet 2-8N, “Installation of Sprinkler Systems”. TFP BlazeMaster Fire Sprinkler Sys-tems shall be employed in wet pipe systems only. (A wet pipe system con-tains water or water and glycerin (anti-freeze solution) and is connected to a water supply so that the water or water and glycerin (anti-freeze solution) will discharge immediately when the sprin-kler is opened. Concealed Installations In accordance with the FM Approval, protection shall be provided for TFP BlazeMaster CPVC pipe and fittings as follows: • The minimum protection shall con-sist of either a permanently in-stalled non-combustible barrier from any area protected by the system. Note A permanently installed barrier is one that cannot be removed with-out substantial cosmetic dam-age. Drop in ceiling tiles, as used in suspended ceilings are specifi-cally considered not be perma-nently installed for the purposes of this definition. Non-combustible is defined as having a minimum fin-ish fire rating of 15 minutes when tested per ASTM E119. • As an alternative to the protection of a permanently installed non-combustible barrier FM has ap-proved the use of TFP BlazeMas-ter CPVC with the Soffi-SteelTM covering system manufactured by Grice Engineering. • FM Approved quick response, standard or extended coverage, or FM Approved residential sprin-klers installed in accordance with their approval limitations may be used. • Solvent cement joints shall be made with TFP-400 or TFP-500 One Step Solvent Cement. Exposed Installations In accordance with the FM Approval, TFP Blazemaster pipe and fittings may be installed without protection (ex-posed), subject to the following addi-tional limitations: NotesWhere piping is installed above drop in ceiling tiles, the piping shall be consid-ered exposed. Ceilings may be combustible, or non permanently installed. Smooth, flat, horizontal, ceilings • Standard Coverage Sprinklers - Pendent sprinklers shall be FM Ap-proved, quick response sprinklers having deflectors installed within 8” from the ceiling. The maximum distance between sprinklers shall not exceed 15’. The maximum ceiling height shall not exceed 10’. - Upright sprinklers shall be FM Ap-proved, quick response sprinklers having deflectors installed within 4” from the ceiling. The maximum distance between sprinklers shall not exceed 15’. The maximum dis-tance from the ceiling to the cen-terline of the main run of pipe shall not exceed 7-1/2”. The distance from the centerline of the sprinkler head to the closest hanger shall be 3”. The maximum ceiling height shall not exceed 10’. - Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers shall be FM Approved, quick re-sponse sprinklers having deflec-tors installed within 12” from the ceiling and within 6” from the side-wall. The maximum distance be-tween sprinklers shall not exceed 14’. The maximum ceiling height shall not exceed 10’. - Solvent cement joints shall be made with TFP-400 or TFP-500 One Step Solvent Cement. • Extended Coverage Sprinklers - Pendent sprinklers shall be FM Ap-proved, quick response sprinklers having deflectors installed within 8” from the ceiling. The maximum distance between sprinklers shall not exceed 20’. When the sprin-klers are not on square spacings, the flow for that sprinkler should be based on the density applied Page 2 of 2 #/IH-900 TYCO FIRE & BUILDING PRODUCTS, 451 North Cannon Avenue, Lansdale Pennsylvania 19446 BlazeMaster® is a registered trademark of Noveon IP Holdings Corp. over the square area calculated for the largest dimension of the sprin-kler spacing. The maximum ceiling height shall not exceed 10’. - Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers shall be FM Approved, quick response sprinklers having deflectors in-stalled within 12” from the ceiling and within 6” from the sidewall. The maximum lateral distance be-tween sprinklers shall not exceed 16’. The maximum ceiling height shall not exceed 10’. - The minimum flow or pressure es-tablished for Extended Coverage Systems shall be per FM Loss Pre-vention Data Sheet 2-8N and 3-26. - Solvent cement joints shall be made with TFP-400 or TFP-500 One Step Solvent Cement. • Residential Sprinklers - Pendent sprinklers shall be FM Approved, residential sprinklers having deflectors installed within 8” from the ceiling. The maximum distance between sprinklers shall not exceed 20’. The minimum re-quired discharge from each sprin-kler is to be the greater of either the approved flow rate applied over the square area calculated for the largest dimension of the sprinkler spacing or a minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/sq.ft. over the actual area (SxL) covered by the sprin-kler. The minimum required dis-charge from each sprinkler is to be the greater of either the approved flow rate applied over the area cal-culated for the largest dimension of the sprinkler spacing or a min-imum discharge of 0.1 gpm/sq.ft. over the actual area (SxL) covered by the sprinkler. The maximum ceiling height shall not exceed 10’. - The minimum flow or pressure es-tablished for Residential Sprinkler Systems shall be per FM Loss Pre-vention Data Sheet 2-8N and 3-26. - Solvent cement joints shall be made with TFP-400 or TFP-500 One Step Solvent Cement. System Risers In accordance with the FM Approval, TFP BlazeMaster pipe and fittings may be installed without protection (ex-posed) as a vertical riser when subject to the following additional limitations: • An automatic sprinkler (of the same type as in the area being protected) shall be located adja-cent to and no further than 1 ft (0.3 m) from the riser. • The automatic sprinkler protecting the riser shall not be considered when determining protection crite-ria for the floor area. The design flow for the sprinkler protecting the riser must be the same as for the other sprinklers; and must be add-ed to the hydraulic calculation. • Solvent cement joints shall be made with TFP-400 or TFP-500 One Step Solvent Cement. Model F1FR series sprinklers are Stan- dard Spray sprinklers, with the excep- tion of the Model F1FR56 Conventional sprinkler which is an Old-style/Conven-tional sprinkler. The Model F1FR Series automatic sprinklers utilize a 3.0 mm frangible glass bulb. These sprinklers have demonstrat- ed response times in laboratory tests which are five to ten times faster than standard response sprinklers. This quick response enables the Model F1FR Series sprinklers to apply water to a fire faster than standard-response sprinklers of the same temperature rating. The glass bulb consists of an accurately controlled amount of special fluid hermetically sealed inside a precisely man- ufactured glass capsule. This glass bulb is specially con- structed to provide fast thermal response. 2. At normal temperatures, the glass bulb contains the fluid in both the liquid and vapor phases. The vapor phase can be seen as a small bubble. As heat is applied, the liquid expands, forcing the bubble smaller and smaller as the liq- uid pressure increases. Continued heating forces the liquid to push out against the bulb, causing the glass to shatter, opening the waterway and allowing the deflector to distrib- ute the discharging water. Model F1FR Series sprinklers provide a wide range of op- tions where quick-response, glass bulb sprinklers are used:• Pendent, recessed pendent, upright, horizontal sidewall, and vertical sidewall deflectors• K-factors of 2.8 (40 metric), 4.0 (57 metric), 4.2 (60 metric), and 5.6 (80 metric)• Flush, recessed, and concealed installations See the Design and Installation Information table in this Bulletin for information on the approvals and availability of specific Model F1FR series sprinkler configurations. Model F1FR Recessed Pendent and Recessed Horizon- tal Sidewall sprinklers are required to be used with Reliable Model F1, F2, or FP recessed escutcheons. See the Re- cessed Escutcheon Data table in this Bulletin for listing and approval information with each specific Model F1FR series sprinkler. Model F1 and F2 recessed escutcheons, shown in Fig. 1 and 3, are a friction fit assembly allowing for 3/4-inch (19mm) and 1/2-inch (12.7mm) of adjustment, respectively. Model FP recessed escutcheons, shown in Fig. 2, provide a 1/2-inch (12.7mm) threaded adjustment. Model F1FR56 Concealed Pendent and Model F1FR56LL Concealed Pendent sprinklers are required to be used with Model CCP cover plates. A standard profile Model CCP cov- er plate is available that provides up to 1/2-inch (12.7mm) of cover plate adjustment. In addition, a low profile Model CCP cover plate is also available that provides up to 5/16-inch (8.0mm) of cover plate adjustment. See the Design and In- stallation Information and Listed and Approved Temperature Ratings tables in this Bulletin for further information on ap- proved cover plate options. Application Model F1FR Series sprinklers are intended for use in accordance with NFPA 13, FM Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets, and the requirements of the Authority Hav- ing Jurisdiction. Care must be exercised that the k-factor, temperature rating, deflector style, and sprinkler type are in accordance with the requirements of the applicable design and installation standards. In addition, Model F1FR Series sprinklers must be used in accordance with their listings and approvals, as well as the information provided in this Bulletin. Installation Glass bulb sprinklers have orange bulb protectors or pro- tective caps to minimize bulb damage during shipping, han- dling and installation. Reliable sprinkler installation wrench- es are designed to install sprinklers with bulb protectors in place. Remove the bulb protector at the time when the sprin- kler system is placed in service for fire protection. Removal of the bulb protector before this time may leave the bulb vul- nerable to damage. Remove bulb protectors by undoing the clasp by hand. Do not use tools to remove bulb protectors. Model F1FR Series sprinklers must be installed with the Reliable sprinkler installation wrench identified in the Design and Installation Information table in this Bulletin. Any other wrench may damage the sprinkler. A leak tight sprinkler joint can be obtained with a torque of 8 to 18 lb-ft (11 to 24 N-m). Do not tighten sprinklers over the maximum recommended installation torque. Exceeding the maximum recommended installation torque may cause leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Recessed Sprinklers Model F1FR Series Recessed sprinklers are to be installed as shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 2, or Fig. 3, as applicable to the spe- cific model being installed. The Recessed Escutcheon Data table in the Bulletin identifies the only recessed escutcheons that are permitted to be used with each Model F1FR Series Recessed sprinkler. The use of any other recessed escutch- eon will void all approvals and negate all warranties. Concealed Sprinklers Model F1FR Series Concealed Pendent sprinklers are to be installed as shown in Fig. 4 or Fig. 5, as applicable to the selected cover plate. Model F1FR56 Concealed Pendent and Model F1FR56LL Concealed Pendent sprinklers have a factory-installed Model CCP cup. A protective cap is in- stalled at the factory that should remain on the sprinkler until the sprinkler is installed and should then be reinstalled on the sprinkler until the cover plate is installed. The concealed sprinkler assemblies are completed by the installation of a Model CCP push-on/thread-off cover plate assembly. The cover plate and sprinkler cup assemblies are joined using a cover plate skirt with flexible tabs for threaded engage- ment. A choice of two Model CCP cover plate assemblies provides either 1/2-inch (13mm) or 5/8-inch (8mm) of cover adjustment. Do not install Model F1FR Series Concealed Pendent sprinklers in ceilings which have positive pressure in the space above. Model F1FR Series Concealed Pendent sprinklers require a 2-5/8-inch (67mm) diameter hole to be cut in the ceiling. The Model RC1 wrench is used to engage the sprinkler wrenching surfaces and to install the sprinkler in the fitting. Remove the protective cap to install the sprinkler, then reinstall the protective cap until the cover plate is installed. When inserting or remov- ing the wrench from the sprinkler/cup assembly, care should be taken to prevent damage to the sprinkler. Do not wrench any other part of the sprinkler/cup assembly. Installation is com- pleted by removing the protective cap from the sprinkler and pushing the cover plate onto the cup. Final adjustment is made by hand turning the cover plate until the skirt flange makes full contact with the ceiling. Cover plate removal requires turning the cover plate in the counter clockwise direction. After installation, inspect all sprinklers to ensure that there is a gap between the cover plate and ceiling and that the four cup slots are open and free from any air flow impediment to the space above. Concealed cover plate/cup assemblies are listed only for use with specific sprinklers. The use of any concealed cover plate/cup assembly other than the Reliable Model CCP with Model F1FR56 Concealed Pendent and Model F1FR56LL Concealed Pendent sprinklers or the use of the Model CCP Concealed cover plate assembly on any sprinkler with which it is not specifically listed my prevent good fire pro- tection and will void all guarantees, warranties, listings and approvals. 3. Improper handling and installation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo-nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. Worldwide Contacts www.tyco-fire.com General Description The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII (TY4334) Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers are decorative, fast response, frangible bulb sprin-klers designed for use in residential occupancies such as homes, apart-ments, dormitories, and hotels. When enhanced flow characteristics for resi-dential portions of any occupancy per NFPA 13 is the major consideration, the Series LFII (TY4334) should be the first choice. When higher flow demands are required for residential sprinklers used in an NFPA 13 design, the large 5.8 K-factor of the Series LFII (TY4334) is an attractive choice. Although mostly intended where residential sprinklers are to be used in an NFPA 13 design, the Series LFII (TY4334) can also be used in wet pipe residential sprin-kler systems for one- and two-family dwellings and mobile homes per NFPA 13D, and wet pipe residential sprinkler systems for residential occupancies up to and including four stories in height per NFPA 13R. The recessed version of the Series LFII (TY4334) is intended for use in areas with finished walls. It employs a two-piece Style 20 Recessed Escutcheon. The Recessed Escutcheon provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjust-ment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush mount-ing surface position. The adjustment provided by the Recessed Escutcheon reduces the accuracy to which the pipe nipples to the sprinklers must be cut. The Series LFII (TY4334) has been designed with heat sensitivity and water distribution characteristics proven to help in the control of residen-tial fires and to improve the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. NOTICE The Series LFII (TY4334) Residen-tial Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authori-ties having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain-ing their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. Design Criteria UL AND C-UL LISTING CRITERIAThe TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII (TY4334) Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers are UL and C-UL Listed for installation in accordance with this section. Residential Sprinkler Design GuideWhen conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided criteria, refer to the Residential Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manufactur-er’s recommendations that may be acceptable to the local authority having jurisdiction. System TypeOnly wet pipe systems may be utilized. Ceiling TypesSmooth flat horizontal, or beamed, or sloped, in accordance with the 2013 Edition of NFPA 13D, 13R, or 13 as applicable. Hydraulic Design(NFPA 13D and 13R)For systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R, the minimum required sprin-kler flow rate are given in Table A as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage areas. The sprinkler flow rate is the minimum required discharge from each of the total number of “design sprinklers” as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. Hydraulic Design(NFPA 13)For systems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required dis-charge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: • The flow rates given in Table A as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage area. • A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2 over the “design area” comprised of the four most hydraulically demand-ing sprinklers for the actual coverage areas being protected by the four sprinklers. Example No. 1: A corridor being pro-tected is 8 ft. wide; consequently, an actual coverage area of 8 ft. x 20 ft. is being contemplated. Based on using the LFII (TY4334) Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers, the flow rate pro-vided in Table A for a 16 ft x 20 ft. cov-erage area is 29 GPM. However based on minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2 the flow rate would be 16 GPM. In this case a minimum flow rate of 29 GPM for this design sprinkler must be utilized. Example No. 2: The room being pro-tected is 16 x 16 ft.. Based on using the LFII (TY4334) Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers, the flow rate pro-vided in Table A for a 16 ft. x 16 ft. cov-erage area is 21 GPM. However based on minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2 the flow rate would be 26 GPM. In this case a minimum flow rate of 26 GPM for this design sprinkler must be utilized. Obstruction To Water Distribution Sprinklers are to be located in accor-dance with the obstruction rules of NFPA 13D, 13R, and 13 as applica-ble for residential sprinklers as well as with the obstruction criteria described within the TYCO Technical Data Sheet TFP490. Operational SensitivityThe sprinklers are to be installed with an end-of-deflector-boss to wall distance of 1-1/4 to 6 inches. In addition the top-of-deflector-to-ceil-ing distance is to be within the range (Ref. Table A) being hydraulically calculated. Sprinkler SpacingThe minimum spacing between sprin-klers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum spacing between sprinklers cannot exceed the width of the coverage area (Ref. Table A) being hydraulically cal-culated (e.g., maximum 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area, or 16 feet for a 16 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area). FM APPROVAL CRITERIAThe Series LFII (TY4334) Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers are FM Approved for installation in accordance with the applicable Factory Mutual Loss Prevention Data Sheet FM 2-5. Criteria provided by FM may differ for UL and/or NFPA, therefore the designer should review and become familiar with Factory Mutual requirements before proceeding with design. The following information pertaining to System Type, Hydraulic Design, and Sprinkler spacing are provided for ref-erence and are not intended to provide complete installation criteria as pro-vided in the applicable Factory Mutual Loss Prevention Data Sheet. Residential Sprinkler Design Guide When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided criteria, refer to the Residential Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manufactur-er’s recommendations that may be acceptable to the local authority having jurisdiction. System TypeOnly wet pipe systems may be utilized. Hydraulic DesignThe number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demand-ing sprinklers. The minimum required discharge from each of the four sprin-klers is to be greater than the following: • The flow rates given in Table B as a function of the maximum allowable coverage area. • A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2 over the “design area” comprised of the four most hydraulically demand-ing sprinklers for the actual coverage areas being protected by the four sprinklers. Example No. 1: A corridor being pro-tected is 10 ft. wide; LFII Sidewall Sprinklers are being installed at 16 ft. apart along the corridor. Consequently, an actual coverage area of 10 ft. x 16 ft. is being contemplated. Based on using the LFII (TY4334) Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers, the flow rate pro-vided in Table B for a 16 ft x 20 ft. cov-erage area is 32 GPM. However based on minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2 the flow rate would be 16 GPM. In this case a minimum flow rate of 24 GPM for this design sprinkler must be utilized. Example No. 2: The room being pro-tected is 16 x 16 ft.. Based on using the LFII (TY4334) Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers, the flow rate pro-vided in Table B for a 16 ft x 16 ft. cov-erage area is 24 GPM. However based on minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2 the flow rate would be 26 GPM. In this case a minimum flow rate of 26 GPM for this design sprinkler must be utilized (in no case shall the design pressure be less than 7 psi). Sprinkler Spacing. The minimum spacing between sprin-klers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum spacing between sprinklers cannot exceed the width of the coverage area (Ref. Table B) being hydraulically cal-culated (e.g., maximum 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area, or 16 feet for a 16 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area). TFP417 Page 4 of 6 Max. Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system which it controls, permission to shut down the affected fire protection system must be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. Absence of an Escutcheon Plate may delay the sprinkler operation in a fire situation. The owner must assure that the sprin-klers are not used for hanging any objects and that the sprinklers are only cleaned by means of gently dusting with a feather duster; otherwise, non-operation in the event of a fire or inad-vertent operation may result. Sprinklers which are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated, or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modi-fied sprinklers must be replaced to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they can not be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid damage to the sprinklers- before, during, and after installation. Sprin-klers damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be replaced. Also, replace any sprin-kler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installa-tion Section). The owner is responsible for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the stan-dards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be con-tacted relative to any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems are rec-ommended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspec-tion Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national code. Installation Instructions Model F3QR56 Dry sprinklers must only be installed in the following fittings: 1. The side outlet of an ANSI B 16.3 class 150 (malleable or ductile) or ANSI B16.4 class 125 (cast) iron pipe tee 2. The run outlet of an ANSI B 16.3 class 150 (malleable or ductile) or ANSI B16.4 class 125 (cast) iron pipe tee, with the side outlet plugged (wet-pipe systems only) 3. Spears Manufacturing Company Brass Thread In- sert Style or Special Reinforced Plastic Thread Style Listed adapter or tee (wet-pipe systems only) (gasket sealed outlets shall not be used) 4. Any Listed CPVC sprinkler adapter or tee only in ac- cordance with Fig. 11 and upon verification that the CPVC adapter or tee does not interfere with the sprin- kler’s inlet (wet-pipe systems only) (gasket sealed outlets shall not be used) Model F3QR56 Dry sprinklers must not be installed into el- bows, welded outlets, or gasket sealed outlets. Installation of the Model F3QR56 Dry sprinkler is not recommend in cop- per pipe systems, as this may reduce the life expectancy of the sprinkler. In all dry-pipe system installations, the Model F3QR56 Dry sprinkler must be installed with protrusion into the fitting in accordance with Fig. 1 through Fig. 9 in this Bulletin. Do not install Model F3QR56 Dry sprinklers with the standard (long) inlet fitting into CPVC fittings that have an internal obstruc- tion (see Fig. 11); this will damage the sprinkler, the fitting, or both. Model F3QR56 Dry sprinklers are available with a short “PL” inlet fitting for installation on CPVC fittings of wet- pipe sprinkler systems only. Model F3QR56 Dry sprinklers connected to wet-pipe sys- tems must be installed with the Exposed Minimum Barrel Length required by Fig. 10 located in a Heated Area. An orange protective clip is factory installed on the sprin- kler to protect the glass bulb thermal element from dam- age. The clip should remain in place during installation of the sprinkler and be removed when the sprinkler system is placed in service. Sprinklers with 3/4” NPT and ISO7-1R3/4 inlets are supplied with a protective cap on the inlet that must be removed before installation. Use the following steps for installation: 1. Cut a hole in the wall or ceiling directly in-line with the outlet of the fitting. See the Installation Data table for the recommended hole diameter based on the es- cutcheon or cover plate option selected. 2. Apply pipe joint compound or PTFE tape to the male threads of the sprinkler’s inlet fitting. 3. Install the sprinkler in the fitting using the installation wrench specified in the Installation Data table. The Model F3 and F3R wrenches are designed to be in- serted into the groves in the sprinkler’s wrench boss as shown in Fig. 12. The Model XLO2 wrench is de- signed to fit into the cup and engage the wrench boss as shown in Fig. 13. Do NOT wrench any part of the sprinkler assembly other than the wrench boss. When inserting or removing the wrench from the sprinkler, care should be taken to prevent damage to the sprin- kler. The sprinkler is then tightened into the pipe fitting to achieve a leak free connection. The recommended minimum to maximum installation torque is 22 - 30 lb- ft (30 – 40 N-m) for 1” NPT and ISO7-1R1 sprinklers, and 14 - 20 lb-ft (19 – 27 N-m) for 3/4” NPT and ISO7- 1R3/4 sprinklers. 3a. Alternatively, where access to the outer tube of the sprinkler is available, the Model F3QR56 Dry sprinkler may be installed using a pipe wrench. The pipe wrench shall only be permitted to inter- face with the galvanized steel outer tube portion of the sprinkler (Item #8 in Fig. 16). Do NOT wrench any other portion of the sprinkler assembly. A pipe wrench can install the sprinkler into the fitting with a large amount of torque; consideration should be given to the need for future removal of the sprin- kler because the installation torque will have to be matched or exceeded to remove the sprinkler. The recommended minimum to maximum installation torque is 22 - 30 lb-ft (30 – 40 N-m) for 1” NPT and ISO7-1R1 sprinklers, and 14 - 20 lb-ft (19 – 27 N-m) for 3/4” NPT and ISO7-1R3/4 sprinklers. 4. Standard and Model HB escutcheons can be in- stalled by slipping the escutcheon over the can until the escutcheon is seated against the ceiling or wall. Model F1 escutcheons are installed by pressing the escutcheon onto the collar until the escutcheon is seated against the ceiling or wall. The Model FP es- cutcheon is installed by pressing or threading the es- cutcheon into the cup by hand; the escutcheon can be tightened against the ceiling or wall by turning the escutcheon in a clockwise direction and removed by turning the escutcheon in a counter-clockwise direc- tion. To install the Model CCP cover plate, first remove the protective clip. Install the Model CCP cover plate on the sprinkler by pressing or threading the cover plate into the cup by hand; the cover plate can be tightened against the ceiling by turning the cover plate in a clockwise direction and removed by turning the cover plate in a counter-clockwise direction. 5. Remove the orange protective clip when placing the sprinkler system in service. Ordering Information Specify: 1. Maintenance The Model F3QR56 Dry Sprinklers should be inspected and the sprinkler system maintained in accordance with NFPA 25. Do not remove the factory applied thermally sen- sitive wax fillet between the bulb supporting cup and the wrenching boss. Do not replace this wax with a substitute substance. An Alternate substance may interfere with proper operation of the sprinkler. Do not clean sprinklers with soap and water, ammonia or any other cleaning fluids. Remove dust by us- ing a soft brush or gently vacuuming. Replace any sprin- kler which has been painted (other than factory applied) or damaged in any way. A stock of spare sprinklers should be maintained to allow quick replacement of damaged or op- erated sprinklers. Prior to installation, sprinklers should be maintained in the original cartons and packaging until used to minimize the potential for damage to sprinklers that would cause improper operation or non-operation. NYC MEA 258-93-E Patents US Patent No. 7,841,418 Other Patents Pending Products Description The Model DH56 are quick response extended cover- age sidewall dry sprinklers for use in light hazard applica- tions. The Model DH56 dry sprinkler with SWC cover plate is a concealed sprinkler that uses Reliable’s push on/thread off sidewall cover. This sprinkler has the cup factory mounted and is shipped with a bulb protector that protects the 3mm frangible glass bulb during shipping and post installation fin- ishing operations. The DH56 can be combined in the field with the FP Escutcheon to make a recessed dry sprinkler. DH56 HSW Concealed with SWC coverplate (See Fig. 7) DH56 HSW (See Fig. 4) DH56 HSW FP Recessed (See Fig. 6) DH56 HSW/HB (See Fig. 5) The SWC cover plate and FP recessed escutcheons have ½” adjustment. The SWC cover plate is attached with 135 & 165 degree solder. In the event of a fire the rising ambient temperature melts the solder and the cover plate is ejected away by springs exposing the 3mm frangible glass bulb. The use of a 3mm bulb allows quick response which enables the sprinkler to apply water to a fire sooner than standard response sprinklers of the same temperature rating. Model DH56 dry sprinklers are intended for use in dry and preaction systems to protect areas subjected to freez- ing temperatures and unheated portions inside and outside buildings. See Fig. 1 for guidelines on using dry sprinklers in wet systems.*DuPont Registered Trademark 2. Environments wherein dry sprinklers are employed can be corrosive. For this reason, Model DH56 dry sprinklers have a special wax fillet placed in the gap between the cup that supports the bulb and the wrenching boss. This wax will not interfere with the operation of the sprinkler, and it prevents contaminants from entering the internal portion of the drop nipple. The wax must not be removed. Application The Model DH56 is a horizontal sidewall dry sprinkler intended for installation in light hazard occupancies in ac- cordance with NFPA 13. These sprinklers are designed to provide fire protection in long and narrow spaces such as hallways, corridors, decks and rooms up to 28 feet (8,5m) wide and 10 feet (3m) long. They are rated for 250 psi (17,2 bar) and can be mounted between 4 and 12 inches (102 and 305mm) down from the ceiling. General Installation Instructions Model DH56 dry sprinklers must be installed only in stan- dard (ANSI B 16.3 class 150 and ANSI B 16.4 class 125) pipe tees in the horizontal position, even at branch line ends. They should not be installed into elbows or pipe couplings located on drop nipples to the sprinklers. For these and other fittings including CPVC, the dry sprinkler should be installed into a fitting to allow protrusion into the fitting in ac- cordance with the diagrams. The “A” dimension of the dry sprinkler, which extends into a freezing zone from wet pipe systems, should be selected to provide, as a minimum, the specified lengths in inches shown in Fig. 1. Caution: Do not install Model DH56 HSW Dry sprinklers into CPVC adapter fittings or tees that have an internal obstruction. This will damage the sprinkler and /or the fitting. Refer to Fig. 8 DH56 HSW To install the DH56 HSW dry sprinkler cut a 21/8” diameter hole in the wall as shown in Fig. 4. Use the Model F3 instal- lation wrench (see Fig. 3) on the square boss to tighten the sprinkler until it is secured in the sprinkler fitting1. Apply a Teflon* based sealant to the sprinkler threads before install- ing in the sprinkler. Installation is completed by removing the orange glass bulb-protector and assembling the slip-on escutcheon to the sprinkler’s can. DH56 HSW/HB To install the DH56 HSW/HB dry sprinkler cut a 2½” di- ameter hole in the wall as shown in Fig. 5. Use the Model F3 installation wrench (see Fig. 3) on the square boss to tighten the sprinkler until it is secured in the sprinkler fitting1. Apply a Teflon* based sealant to the sprinkler threads be- fore installing in the sprinkler. Installation is completed by removing the orange glass bulb-protector and assembling the slip-on escutcheon to the sprinkler’s can. DH56 HSW Recessed with FP Escutcheon To install the DH56 HSW dry sprinkler with the FP Escutch- eon as a recessed sprinkler cut a 25/8” diameter hole in the wall as shown in Fig. 6. Temporarily remove the plastic pro- tective cap, and then use the Model XLO2 wrench1 (see Fig. 2) to tighten the sprinkler until it is secured in the sprin- kler fitting. Note: The Model XLO2 wrench has a notch in it to accommodate the deflector top. This wrench can only be inserted one way. Care must be taken not to damage the deflector during tightening. Apply a Teflon* based seal- ant to the sprinkler threads before installing in the sprinkler. It is recommended that the sprinkler be protected during plastering and painting operations by reinstalling the plastic protective cap. Installation is completed by removing the protective cap and inserting the push-on escutcheon. Turn clockwise to adjust the escutcheon against the wall. DH56 HSW Concealed with SWC Cover Plate To install the DH56 HSW dry sprinkler with the SWC cover- plate as a concealed sprinkler, cut a 21/8” diameter hole into the wall as shown in Fig. 7. Temporarily remove the plastic protective cap, and then use the Model XLO2 wrench1 (see Fig. Installation is completed by removing the protective cap and inserting the coverplate. Coverplate as- semblies provide ½” (13mm) of adjustment. Final adjust- ment is made by turning the coverplate clockwise until the skirt flange makes full contact with the wall surface. Cover removal requires turning in the counter-clockwise direction. Concealed coverplate assemblies are listed only for use with specific sprinklers. The use of any other concealed wall sprinkler or the use of the SWC coverplate on any sprinkler with which it is not specifically listed will void all guarantees, warranties, listings and approvals. Note: DH56 and DH56 Recessed Sprinklers have orange bulb protectors to minimize bulb damage during shipping, handling, and installation. REMOVE THIS PROTECTION AT THE TIME THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM IS PLACED IN SER- VICE FOR FIRE PROTECTION. Removal of the protectors before this time may leave the bulb vulnerable to damage. RASCO wrenches are designed to install sprinklers when covers are in place. REMOVE PROTECTORS BY UNDO- ING THE CLASP BY HAND. DO NOT USE TOOLS TO RE- MOVE THE PROTECTORS. *DuPont Registered Trademark 1 Installation Wrenches: Throughout this technical bulletin, Reliable has specified specific installation wrenches for use on each version of our sprinklers. A pipe wrench may also be used to install a dry sprinkler provided that it only interfaces with the steel outer tube of the assembly (Item #8 on fig 10). Keep in mind that a pipe wrench will incorporate a large amount of torque into the final assembly. This torque will have to be matched or exceeded upon the sprinkler’s removal at a later date. Fig. 1 3. 4. Step 3 Step 2 Step 1 Fig. 2 - XLO2 Wrench Fig. 3 - F3 Wrench Maintenance Model DH56 Quick Response Dry Sprinklers should be in- spected and the sprinkler system maintained in accordance with NFPA 25. Do not remove the factory applied thermally sensitive wax fillet between the bulb supporting cup and the wrenching boss. Do not replace this wax with a substitute substance. An alternate substance may interfere with proper operation of the sprinkler. Do not clean sprinklers with soap and water, ammonia or any other cleaning fluids. Remove dust by using a soft brush or gentle vacuuming. Remove any sprinkler which has been painted (other than factory applied) or damaged in any way. A stock of spare sprinklers should be maintained to allow quick replacement of damaged or operated sprinklers. Prior to installation, sprinklers should be maintained in their original cartons and packaging until used to minimize the potential for damage to sprinklers that would cause improper operation or non-operation.
