HomeMy WebLinkAboutDrug Free Declaration Letter (2)December 12, 2013 Dear City Official, Last year representatives from over 90 cities from all over Idaho took action following the passage of ballot initiatives in the states of Colorado and Washington legalizing marijuana for recreation use by requesting the federal government take appropriate action to ensure federal drug-free policy is upheld in all states. As an association we also passed a resolution urging the State Legislature to oppose all efforts to legalize marijuana for any purpose in the State of Idaho – an action they took with the passage of Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 112. These were both important steps in letting others know that we do not want marijuana legalized in our communities. While there is still much to do regarding our growing concerns of marijuana, our communities continue to be impacted by a variety of drugs in ways that are hurting individuals, families, and businesses alike. Unfortunately, no one is safe from the ills of alcohol, tobacco, prescription medications, and other drugs – not our kids in schools, our places of employment, or our public facilities including parks and roadways. In fact, these are some of the areas which are the most impacted by drug use and abuse. This is not acceptable and we must educate our children and help others in need to have healthy cities. As elected leaders in our communities, it is important that we stand up and do everything we can to ensure Idaho remains vigilant in combating illegal drugs. That is why we, the members of the Association of Idaho Cities Drug Task Force Executive Committee and the members of the Association of Idaho Cities Board are asking you to join us by agreeing to have your cities name and elected officials included as signatories to the attached resolution. You can do it officially at a City Council meeting or otherwise, but we want to know that you are our partners and are committed to doing everything in your power to fight drugs in our communities. If you and the community you represent are willing to take a stand against substance abuse and addiction, please notify Robert Simison with the City of Meridian via email (rsimison@meridiancity.org) by January 31st so that we can include your information as part of this Declaration. We look forward to the Association of Idaho Cities continuing to show strong leadership in Idaho and beyond on this important issue.
