I have always wanted my wife to see some of the country that I was familiar with as a youth. We loaded up our “tin tent”, our fifth wheel camp trailer and set off across central Idaho. We made our first stop near Mackay and set up near the Big Lost River. We couldn’t see much of the mountains but we did fish the river and a pond. What a delight it was! Moose, deer, a wild turkey, birds of prey; all for our enjoyment it seemed. It was peaceful, even tranquil. The smoke cleared somewhat and we were able to enjoy fantastic views of the White Clouds, Mount Borah, the Salmon River drainage, and the old mining districts. I once worked in the hard rock mines in times past and it was a pleasure to remember things of the past. What a herculean endeavor it was. They did move moun- tains, from the inside out. Humankind is amazing. There are so many feats that were accom- plished mostly by the sweat of the brow and engineering feats as well, with new techniques developed out of necessity. It is not unlike what happened in this area in the early years. While gone on our vacation I worried but I needn’t have. Everything went very well. We have such a great staff! They are workers, all. I can’t think of a time that our parks have looked any better, or a time that we have accomplished so much on city streets. Signal coor- dination or sequencing is about to become a reality on 2 nd East. I am anxious for it. This is done in conjunction with the State Highway Department as they are the owners of Highway 33. Changes are being made at Riverside Park with new fields being seeded in the very near future. These are multipurpose fields situated just north of the canal and west of the former K-Mart building. Negotiations are coming to fruition with a new baseball complex near the Junior High School, just north of the Rexburg Medical Center. Soil has been moved in from the new Super Wal-Mart site. This should have a great impact for our area. Currently local teams head out of town for tournaments. Why not have those tournaments here? Maybe there will be. We might attract a new motel or two and even eating establishments. The side- walk along the municipal golf course with a new vinyl chain link fence will soon be complet- ed as well. There are some improvements and a substantial enlargement to Evergreen Park with vinyl coated chain link fence along the canal for safety. A great many of the improve- ments in infrastructure, parks and playing fields are driven by Envision Madison. Election year is fast approaching. This is a local election with City Council and Mayoral spots to be filled. Please get to know the candidates and please vote. It is important. At the end of our trip we stopped for a day in Nampa, Idaho. We hadn’t originally planned to go there but we received word that my last living aunt had passed. She was the one I had previously written about who was the maker of those wonderful rolls. She was the last of that generation; a product of and participant in the Great Depression. She left Eastern Idaho to work for her aunt for $1.50 a month to keep house and tend kids. She later worked for an uncle for $2.50 a month doing the same thing. That was the generation that accomplished so much; “The Greatest Generation”. They endured and won World War ll. They built Hoover Dam and countless other amazing projects. Many of them are in the Great State of Idaho. Thank You! We, of this Generation can do great things too. We may have to! Thanks to You All! -Richard S.
