Happy New Year!
“Tis the Season”. I always enjoy Christmas and New Year’s. It brings back memories of the
distant past and the not so distant past. It was always fun on Christmas afternoon to visit with
cousins and see what they got. We played with each other’s toys. We shared in the excitement.
We then sat down to a Christmas feast. Wow! Our parents were depression era survivors, if
you will, and they went all out on preparing a feast. Homemade preserves, homemade pies,
home cured ham, and my favorites were English style puddings. I most enjoyed the repeating
of stories from the “old folks”. My Grandpa would play banjo and guitar, my Grandmother
would play the zither. My aunt would play harmonica, and everybody would sing. Much of the
time it would be in three part harmony. It was a joyous time. Somehow as we grew older
things began to change. The older ones slipped away one by one and we got televisions.
Those televisions robbed us of that special time shared with young and old alike.
I want to share with you an experience that I, as your Mayor, am allowed to participate in. It is
the annual Shop With A Cop event. We meet on a Saturday morning each year at the taber-
nacle. We meet children of lesser means and some with special situations that would make
their Christmas season less than ideal. Each child is paired with an officer that works in this
area. They might be ISP, Fish and Game, area police departments, and sheriff’s offices, even
BLM. They all come together to provide something special, something memorable, something
that is life changing for the children. They join with officers and leave the tabernacle in police
cars. With lights flashing and sirens screaming, they make their way to the Golden Arches
where the Cichos family generously host breakfast. They get to choose what to eat. After
breakfast, “thank you Cichos family”, we all journey to Walmart where each child is provided
with a pair of winter snow boots, coats, hats, and gloves. They then are given a credit so that
they can buy gifts for their family members. It is often an emotional thing for me to watch as
these children fuss over picking just the perfect gift for dad or mom and their brothers and
sisters. They spend less time on themselves. They are often caught up in the joy of giving. It is
the finest hour for our “finest” in uniform, as well. I commend the Rexburg Police Depart-
ment and all of those who participate. This is a noble thing. Thank you Walmart and all the
employees that helped make this event go smoothly.
It gives me joy and brings back to mind the happiness and excitement of the Christmas Season
of my youth. The City of Rexburg is doing well. We are indeed Americas Family Community.
May we all prosper in the coming new year. May we grow ever closer as family. May we teach
our families of the joy of giving and sharing. May each holiday season be memorable. Memo-
rable in the celebration and renewal of values that has made this city and our nation great.
Thank you for your sharing and goodness.

The Madison Library Foundation is excited to an-
nounce the creation of the Friends
of the Madison Library group. For a
small yearly fee you can become a
member and help support our local
library! We help purchase comput-
ers, activity kits, and worn out circu-
lation materials. If you have bene-
fited from this great community resource, please consider
joining to show your appreciation and make our library
even better! Our members only kickoff event will be held
Saturday, January 17, from 10 am to noon; and we'll be
having a meet and greet story time with some of your
children's favorite characters! If anyone has a superhero,
princess, or other type of costume and would be willing
to help with the event, please contact webmas-
ter@madisonlibfound.org

We would like to thank the community for
the generous donations to Shop with a
Cop. After last month’s newsletter, we re-
ceived so many donations to this program. From a
small child carrying in his change jar to neighbor-
hoods forgoing neighbor gifts and giving to Shop
with a Cop instead. Thanks to your donations, this
program will be able to continue to bless the lives of
children and families who otherwise might not have
Christmas. It is wonderful
to see our community
come together to help
brighten so many lives
with the true meaning of
Christmas. Thank you!
Snow Removal Reminder
Responsibilities and Directions: Rexburg citizens and
businesses must remove snow and ice from adjacent
pedestrian areas. These areas include, but are not lim-
ited to, sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways. Each
year, many avoidable accidents happen because of
improper snow and ice removal. Compliance is crucial
if we are to have a safe community. Citizens and busi-
ness owners must comply with the following direc-
tions in snow and ice removal:
Citizens and business owners “cannot” push snow or
ice across or into public streets (Idaho Code § 18-
3907).
Snow and ice, once removed, must be stored on the
property. For many property owners, snow and ice
can be stored in the yard or other locations on the
property. For owners of large properties, such as busi-
nesses with large parking lots, snow and ice storage
areas must be incorporated into the property
(Ordinance 1026 § 5.5[A] [9]). Please make sure all
snow and ice is removed from around dumpsters so
our garbage trucks can get close enough to empty
them.
