Mayors Message:
The days are getting longer. I do relish the thought of more sunshine and hope
we get enough snow in the mountains for the coming water season. I really
don’t care if we get snow here in the City of Rexburg; in fact I think we could
do quite nicely without snow on our city streets. I have heard the usual com-
plaints about our streets this winter and am often dismayed at the comments we
receive. The streets in Rexburg are cleaner than those in Idaho Falls. Idaho
Falls does not plow residential streets but we do. I recently traveled to Idaho
Falls for meetings and was pleasantly surprised to see that our streets were bet-
ter. Even Hitt Road had more of an accumulation of hard and packed ice than
our Yellowstone highway or any of our arterials and even our residential streets.
The cost for plowing our streets is at least five thousand dollars for each event.
The streets are plowed when the snow reaches a depth of two inches and some-
times we start before when more snow is on the way. It takes nine hours to
clear our streets. If it continues to snow, we continue to plow and often con-
tract outside equipment to come in to stay ahead of the downfall. We are colder
than Idaho Falls and receive more snowfall as well. It seems like there is not
that much of a difference in the two areas, however, it has a great effect on the
condition of our roads.
I want to commend our city road and street crew for the great work that they
do. I want them to know that most of the city’s residents understand and ap-
preciate their efforts. We live in a great city. If things such as our streets are less
than ideal, it is because of conditions beyond our control. We try to plow the
streets during the safest time for the public which is in the middle of the night.
If you hear or are awakened in the early morning hours by the sounds of the
snow removal crews just rollover and say a prayer of thanks for the men who
have left their warm beds and homes in an attempt to make our streets safer for
us as we travel to school and to work.
Thanks to you all.

To Whom It May Concern:
Any person, firm, or corporation possessing
property within the City of Rexburg bears the
responsibility for keeping the sidewalks adjacent
to said property safe and traversable. Required
maintenance includes but is not limited to snow
and ice removal. After being cleared from side-
walks, driveways, parking lots, and other private
land, snow should be stored on the property.
Snow removed from sidewalks, driveways, park-
ing lots, and other private land cannot be pushed
across or into public streets. State criminal law
prohibits any obstruction of the public roads,
streets, or highways. If a property owner fails to
remove snow and ice from a sidewalk adjacent to
his or her property within twenty-four hours of
notification by the City of Rexburg, the City has
the right to remove the snow at the owner’s ex-
pense, and the owner will be responsible for pay-
ing a snow removal fee. (See Ordinance 1019 Art.
I § A-C; Ordinance 1019 Art. III § A).
The Rexburg Development Code requires every
parking lot with more than four parking spaces
to set aside the equivalent of 10% of the parking
area for landscaping and snow storage.
(Ordinance 1026 § 5.5[A][9]). Every property
owner, however, should plan for and expect the
responsibility of storing snow.
Thank you for improving the safety of our city
by complying with the snow removal laws.
Sincerely,
City of Rexburg
The Rexburg Tabernacle Orchestra
is preparing for their Winter Concert, Wed. March 6, 7:30 pm. This will be the first pro-
gram for the interim conductor, Darrell Brown, to conduct. He is taking the position while
Dr. Kevin Call and his wife serve an LDS mission in Canada. Brown is a full-time faculty
member in the BYU-I Music Department, where he instructs students, directs ensembles,
and teaches composition classes. Previous to his move to Rexburg, he has taught and con-
ducted in Corpus Christi Texas, in Provo Utah, and in Camelot Schools in Kwekwe, Zim-
babwe. His wife, Robyn, along with principal cellist, James Gordon, will be performing Concerto for Two
Cellos by Vivaldi. Also featured in this concert will be Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, "Pastoral". This is a
free concert and is sponsored by the City of Rexburg and the Rexburg Arts Council.
