Mayors Message:
Thanksgiving, Wow! I really enjoy this time of year when friends,
neighbors and families gather. Some of my fondest memories are of the
fun times growing up with cousins. I was raised on a little place on a river
with old meandering channels where we could on some thanksgivings en-
joy a rowdy game of ice hockey. We used just the right shape and size of
rocks for pucks. Our sticks, I should call them clubs, were hewn from a
fork of a Russian olive tree. We didn’t eat just turkey, we had pheasant,
duck and even goose and sometimes home cured ham. Our moms, it
seems, relished in a competition of sorts; who could make the lightest pie
crust? Who could make the fluffiest rolls? And on and on. How lucky
could you get? Nothing could be better than to be with family on
Thanksgiving Day. I am thankful for those fond memories. As so many
are now missing from our table, yet there are things that still warm the
heart. I attended the Thanksgiving Concert at the Rexburg Tabernacle. I
heard one of the finest performances one could hear. There was great va-
riety, everything from harmonicas to a delightful trio with amazing har-
mony. They reminded me of my Mom and Aunts because they would of-
ten perform for the family. There was also a spoon player, a jug player
and a wash board player. What a delight and it was held in our wonderful
Rexburg Tabernacle, for which we need to give thanks. We are blessed to
live in this great upper valley and in this great country. We should be very
thankful. We need to express our thanks for all those who serve. We are
so incredibly blessed. We need to thank our maker for all that we have
and enjoy. With the coming season let us be aware of those who have
less. May we open our hearts, our homes and our pocketbooks. We have
a program set up here at Rexburg City Hall in which you can contribute to
those struggling to pay their utility bills. You can pay a little extra on your
own bill and the excess will be distributed to those less fortunate. There
are many ways in which we can help others. Doing so will make this a
more memorable time of year for you and your family. We need to pass
our blessings on to others. We need to teach the coming generation the
joy of Thanksgiving by giving back.
Thank You All
Mayor Richard S. Woodland
